Question about health coverage

When Drummon (Jon Voight) makes his summation, he says:
"What will giving a judgment of $10 million accomplish? All insurance company premiums
will spin out of reach, and it will pave the way for government-controlled health coverage. Yours is a grave responsibility."

Why government-controlled health coverage would be a disaster?

I live in Italy, and here we have public health service, which, at least, guarantees medical care for everyone: you don't need to have any insurance.
Well, actually, sometimes, it doesn't work very well: for example, if you need a specialistic examination or a test, you could wait a long time...
But, at least, for example, if I feel ill, I can go to the hospital and I can be visited.

Actually, I don't understand if government-controlled health coverage would mean public health service.
