HAha,
yeah know what you mean, for some reason nobody has seen this. Maybe because almost nobody can pronounce the title properly. I'm lucky I spotted it showing late at night on an art channel and made a VHS copy, beautiful movie, very atmospheric. I also like the young hooker, she is a fresh breeze throughout the film.

I saw this on an Arts programme, when I lived in Ireland, where we had Sky Arts 2 and World Cinema listings. Areal knock-out. Different; watchable.

There was another Russian film in that series called, I think, "A Wedding" - absolutely brilliant and so different to the usual pap served up by Hollywood - all soupy cascading violins & every one in white tie & tails.

This was rough, nasty and very funny, as well as moving.

I have tried to get a listing of recent Russian films from IMDB, but I may have pressed the wrong buttons.

There is also a mass of French films from the 1950's (Robert Hossein comes to mind) and some gems from Eastern Europe, some of which have been shown on the ARTE programmes here in France.

I can think of "Toi le venin" with Marina Vlady and, I think, Henri Vidal - directed by Robert Hossein.

A real cookie gem.

If any reader can direct me to the Russian film about the wedding, I would be most grateful.

I am also trying to get a copy of "'L'amour de la vie" - a French film about Artur Rubinstein (1963).
