Wouldn't towns already have a postman by then?

Wouldn't someone have already thought of having some kind of mail carrier or messenger as a means of communication between the towns long before The Postman showed up? Most of the towns appeared fairly peaceful, and probably cooperated with each other for their survival. It seems to me that communication of this nature would have been among the first things the towns established.

I can guarantee Bethlehem had mounted messengers to carry orders to outposts or to civilian leaders in his territory, so why not the towns?

Well here's the problem, the townspeople don't want to leave their towns for fear of being taken by the Holnists and conscripted in their army. So they stay in their towns for safety.

In the movie they mentioned all the plagues that were going around, and between the plagues and the raids by bad guys, the people built walls around their homes for protection. That would be a natural reaction when any contact with the outside world could be dangerous.

As already mentioned, the areas around their villages were practically wilderness. There were still survivalists nuts, Holnist forces and dangerous wild life/disease remaining. All government no longer existed, so the only people they could depended upon where the ones immediately part of the community... anyone else was looked upon with suspicion.

But it is mentioned in the book that some villages had started to trade with neighboring ones again, but only hesitantly.
