Question w.r.t. ending (warning: SPOILERS)

Okay, for those of you who don't want a ruined ending, here's your last chance to back out :)

>>>>> ------------------------------------- <<<<<

Hi, I was wondering about the various interpretations people have, related to the ending in which Charles gets hanged and dies. He sees one last fairy that seems to "explode", i.e., transforms into a sky full of stars. Anyway, the interesting bit is at the very end, when Charles actually rescues his wife from falling into the snow cavity. They seem to live happily ever after...

So, my angle is this: Charles actually dies, and is reunited with his wife in a thing we can call heaven (the reunion theme was already mentioned by A.C. Doyle during the beginning of the movie). A question that still lingers on in my mind is what does the final fairies he sees have to do with this situation ?

Comments, ideas, suggestions, interpretations, ... ?

Thanks.

i think it was explained in the film... though I might be wrong.
Fairies are considered to be messengers between the two "realms", i.e. "heaven" and the land of the living. They are the ones transporting us, like the ferry-man in classical mythology.
At least that's how I understood it.
That help?

Yep, there's one item of information I overlooked :)

Thx.

I always understood it so that the fairy was his wife...

Faries exist in "in between" states, times, places, etc. So therefore he was able to see the fairy as he was in between life and death. I didn't think it had any meaning. The whole stars thing could be a reference to eternity.

I think that the stars also alluded to what Linda told him when they were standing on the roof and she pointed at the starry sky - that she sees thousands of worlds. That's what he finally saw when passing from one world to another, I think.
