This film deserves a DVD

Does anyone know if a dvd has ever been released of this film? I truly believe that it deserves one. if you know of one please pm me.

reply

It has been released on DVD, I've got it... and since I live in Norway I would think it not too hard fining it elsewhere... I got it from the gas-station even... cheap.

reply

DVD? Been after it for ages???

Where? Where? Where?
Thanks

Region 2, and I believe may be full screen...

reply

I ordered and have received the above. It is a Region 2 release, and (sadly) appears to have been cropped to 1:33 fullframe rather than the 1:85 widescreen theatrical aspect ratio. On the plus side for Anglophones is the English language voicetrack (subtitles available in several other languages). Still, with my much-watched Blockbuster-'previewed' VHS tape wearing out, this is a happy find...

I wish....let you know if I find anything.

reply

Hi,
look for it on ebay.com. I have seen it there as region 1!

reply

this film deseverves one indeed, so I can show it to my friends because I really want them to see it

reply

Netflix has it. I just rented it from them, and I believe you can buy the dvds you rent or "lose."

reply

Interesting - if it was Region 1, it was bootleg; I wouldn't have thought Netflix would take that risk...

So far only a Laser Disc and VHS in the U.S. The film didn't do so well in the states, though I love it to death. I'd give it another year or two, depending on whether people sign petitions or not. Look what that did for movies like Orgazmo, Killer Klowns from Outer Space and Beyond the Valley of the Dolls. But we are dealing with Universal, notorious for not giving a damn about any film they made that didn’t return profit. But that didn’t stop Anchor Bay from purchasing the rights and releasing Army of Darkness, so who knows. Until then Laser Disc is the best way to view it at home.

reply

True. Another very good example of Anchor Bay finally releasing a region 1 version of a much anticipated movie is "Cemetery Man". For years this was only available on DVD outside of the USA. However after much talk from fans, the DVD was just recently released on region 1 in the USA. Hopefully the same will happen with Photographing Fairies.

I've looked all over the Netflix site for this move and haven't come across it yet. Also tried Blockbuster and Greencine... I might just pick up the region 2 version myself (fortunately, I've got a spare DVD player that plays all regions).

Ive got a DVD of it, but im living in Sweden and its region 2. I dont think its still out there because i bought it for 19 SEK (about 2,6 USD) and didnt have a clue, I have to say that I dont regret it! One of the best movies in my over 550 DVDs collection. An URL (http://www.axelmusic.dk/productDetails/5706141740434) from a Danish webshop says that its out of assortment, but you can get a mail if they will get it in stock again...

I found it Used in the swedish EBay for 10 SEK, like 1,4 USD :-)

As well as the scandinavian DVD release that you can pick up on eBay etc (I have one via Denmark) it would apear that you can get a French one. The film there was called "Forever". Good title.

Read all this info two weeks ago and jumped on ebay and found the Scandinavian DVD right away. Brilliant film and quite fine DVD transfer eventhough it is pan and scan 1.33:1 instead of 1.85:1. Thanks for all your comments everyone.

What a truely wonderful film though, one which deserves much more recognition.

There's also a Spanish R2 release from Universal under the title 'Fotografiando Hadas' with an English soundtrack. 'Looks to be the same fullframe transfer that were used in the Denmark R2 and the recent Australian R4 DVD.

Now that Jane Eyre 2006 has catapulted Toby Stephens to stardom, maybe this movie will be released onto a Region 1 DVD format. We can only hope.

Just recorded it off the Sundance Channel (USA). A beautiful print, full-frame, no big loss though, since the film was shot full matte.

I just got this movie in OAR letterbox Laserdisc. Have never watched it but I'm excited to.

For an earlier poster, I've rented several titles from Netflix that I know were European releases. They don't do bootlegs but I know they have a few films they ship that are region free pressings from outside the US.

reply

So I just got around to watching my widescreen laserdisc of this movie and WOW.

First off, it is perhaps the best video quality of any Laserdisc I own, and I have around 200 laserdiscs. This laserdisc looks better than your average DVD, the only downside is there are no extra features. The audio quality is great too and I really liked the film.

I wouldn't put it on any greatest of all time lists but I'd give it a solid 8 out of 10. A very above average film. Anyone who enjoyed Big Fish or Pan's Labyrinth will love this film which came before those two.

Looking at a Laserdisc collectors database it seems it is quite rare, only 4 people besides me own it and most titles on that site will have about 50 owners. I searched eBay and found no copies of the LD and only one copy on VHS. This has to be one of the best films that is hard to find on any format.

If any one would like to know how to get a all region DVD of this film, good pic, english, widescreen, get in contact.

Available in R0 version from Malaysia (via ebay. Full frame, Dolby 5.1 and 2.0 in English together with removable English, Chinese and Malay subs. Good quality print too.

The VHS tape and the laserdisc are both wide-screen...

Apparently, there's a new PAL-format release (Region 4) of 'Photographing Fairies' on DVD due June 2, 2008:

This looks to be by the budget-DVD distributor, Payless Entertainment Pty, Ltd:

http://www.payless.com.au/

so I wouldn't part with my laserdisc, VHS or Region 2 full-frame DVD release just yet...

reply

I have the region 2 dvd and just now the double presentation on the payless disc here in Australia and I can tell you that despite it only being on a single layer the payless region 4 is the better transfer. It is sharper and has less macro blocking artifacts. Cheaper too, and the second film 'the Commissioner'(dir. George Sluizer(the vanishing) with John Hurt is very fine also.

reply

OK, on the basis of that I've ordered a copy of the Payless disc. I assume the Payless transfer is Full-Frame? - the VHS and Laserdisc were widescreen, and the cinematography is deserving of a Blu-ray transfer...

reply

BTW, does anyone know whether these DVD releases are all the same transfer?

I was in for a big surprise when, on a whim, I tried the new PayLess R4 disc on my old Toshiba SD-2815 (R1) player - it played without a hitch. To make sure I hadn't somehow gotten an all-region player in an R1 case when I bought the Toshiba at a Circuit City sale lo, many moons ago, I tried the Global Video R2 disc of Photographing Fairies - nope, that resulted in a stern Check Region warning. So, while my experience may not be workable for others, it is possible the PayLess R4 disc may play on your R1 DVD player. (Computers are another matter - my more recently manufactured Dell with R1 DVD drive will display the PayLess menu, but can't actually play the movies.) The Payless disk only cost me about $7.65 USD delivered, so it wasn't an expensive gamble, and the EzyDVD folks were very pleasant to deal with.

Now as to video - well the FullFrame image is generally OK, but there's noticeable dirt and dust here and there. If you have a VHS tape or Laserdisc in good shape, hold onto it.

reply

I have that version and the transfer is slightly higher than terrible. Why won't they release a widescreen version of this with a decent transfer? It's a shame.

reply

2010 and still not a region 1 dvd in sight, sigh!

reply

I recently saw on Ebay a DVD for this movie packaged together with a movie called The Commissioner...I think it was from the US...is this not a Region 1 DVD...off to Ebay again...

Edit: hmmmmm the one from the US says its PAL (not Region 1)...oh well bought it in any event...I do have a region free DVD player so hope it works...

Edit: Received the DVD in the mail...Well it does work, but only in black and white...oh well...still enjoy this movie...

reply

Just got the DVD on eBay. Brand new but only in fullcreen. Good sound and picture.
