I think it was fairly obvious they were joking, dontcha think? They made fun of Good Will Hunting and praised Phantoms. Phantoms is candy, nothing more. Separate jokes from reality, first.

It was a movie for the fans, meant to be immature and self-indulgent.

He had a hard job, especially since it was his job to ask the audiences questions--like how could the monster have escaped being observed and why was the scientist capable of figuring all this out on the fly...expositional type elements.

I liked the idea of the monster believing it was the devil because the people it ate thought it was.

I'm not saying the movie wasn't fun and campy, and I'm not saying that he didn't do an alright job. I'm just saying that nobody would give a *beep* about this movie if they didn't suck down anything that J&SB said.
Even if they remembered the movie, nobody would give a *beep* about Affleck's performance. It's irritatingly mediocre.
