The guy played by Peter O'Toole came up with the idea that the thing can be fought off with oil eating bacterias since it is based on hydrocarbon chains.

And it works and they kill it off. But one of the so called drones, the deputy playey by Liev Schreiber, is shwon at the very end of the movie laughing when he watchs a tv docu with O'Tooles character who reports about the thing, and that it might cause one day the annihilition of men. His last sentence to a female guest -- the last scene takes place in a western like bar -- who is confused about his laughing: "Should I show you something"

It was theorized by O'Toole character that a small piece (=> one of these drones) of the "mother-thing" could survive independently.
