I liked this movie. No, I have not read the book, so maybe that's why people didn't like it. Other than that I'm at a loss. Well acted ("Ben you were da BOMB in phantoms, yo!"). Leiv was cool, maybe a little campy, but believable. Character development and back-stories were present. There were decent effects, and the whole atmosphere had a creepy apocalyptic feel to it.
Ya, it had a bit of "The Thing" in there. I actually thought it was like a long episode the x-files with no Mulder or Sculley.
However, the whole "Ancient Evil" thing was really not like The Thing.
Little added things that were cool:
The collection of pace-makers and watches.
Absorbing the knowledge and thoughts of the townspeople (it thought it was the devil cuz they did).
The moth.
The scene with the sirens, and the one at the end when all the people show up.
C'mon, what is there to dislike soooooo much!?

I think it's that it's set up as a creepy low key mystery and then halfway through it goes "Blargh! CREATURE FEATURE!!!!" and the audience are like "lol wut?". Same reason some people hated Jeepers Creepers and From Dusk Til Dawn; if you're making a hokey monster movie, it's not the best idea to surprise your audience with the fact after they've already invested in a more realistic setting.

I saw it for the first time today and I rate it 10/10.

Just saw it now and i rate it much higher then imdb does too. Probably because there is so much crap out there nowadays thx to syfy and consorts, this was made before the syfys and the likes, and it shows.
Not gonna say its greatest ever but it didnt bore or didnt make me roll my eyes or even just quit watching like i do with most :D

Yeah I liked it too and I guess I don't mind that it turned into a creature feature. Huge fan of rose McGowan and she was great. Love the x files too so this is just typically the genre of movies and shows that I like. But even besides that it wasn't terrible.

No idea, really. I've always loved this movie, gives me the creeps! And Liev as that creepy AF cop...dude absolutely rocked it, he was terrifying, really. The only terrible thing about the movie is the casting of Affleck. He was far too young for the role he was playing, and he wasn't yet a good actor, so he almost ruins the scenes he is in, lol. Other than that, I thought the movie was pretty genius.
