made bulimia seem like a joke...

I have bulimia but I am entering treament in a few days...when I saw this movie I was kind of upset...her best friends makes bulimia seem like a joke. ITS A DISEASE...not a "dieting tip" that you would tell your friends about.

Well first of all I would like to say good for you--about getting treatment. Bulimia is a much more serious disease than a lot of people realize.

WHen people hear the word "bulimia" or "anorexia" they think--"Sickos. WHy don't you just eat or not throw up? You brought that problem on yourself." But they don't understand that it's not something that you can help.

Take alcholics for example. People think that if you're an alcholic, it's your fault. But it's a mental thing that affects you both mentally and physically. To put it into perspective, let's say you have ten different people in a bar and you give them all the same amount of alcholol. The non-alcholics will drink it and be satisfied. The alcholics literally can't stop.

When people don't understand something or fear something, they either make fun of it or destroy it. It's typical human nature. Look at how socioty treats homosexuals and people with AIDS. They treat them like lepers.

What people need to realize is that not everything is as simple as they make it our to be. They need to put the shoe on the other foot--I think that's the saying--before they judge people, but sadly, we are living in a cruel, cruel world, and not every decision people make is done so justly. bulimia and Anorexia are just a few of the many things that are taken lightly by socioty.

and how come her friend didn`t suffer as much as she did!!! her friend seemed to be ok with it but she was pale and all that. Well friend isn`t the right word to describe her!

I do not think it treated it as a joke.

Primarily the movie dealt with anorexia. Andie only threw up when she was made eat (by her mother) and when her friend convinced her to eat the cake and told her she could get rid of it or when she binged and panicked. Which is common with most people with anorexia.

Her friend was not giving her stupid diet tips. Her friend obviously had bulimia and when Andy told her about being the fattest girl in the gym she shared her secret with her because she has probably been there. Plenty of people with eating disorders give each other tips and encourage each other whether its wrong or not.

I think the girl with bulimia saw some of herself and her struggles in Andy and she revealed her secret to her to help her even though it was stupid to encourage it.

If the film had focused on bulimia then it would have developed more fully and not seemed like a diet tip just thrown in there. It mainly focused on anorexia and did an amazing job portraying the struggle and feelings one has with anorexia.

As for the person who asked why the other friend wasn't as bad as Andie the simple reason is that everyone's body reacts differently. Some people can get sicker than others just because of their body chemistry. Your damaging your body either way and some people's body can handle the abuse longer than others. Some can die when they are not even skeletal or throwing up as someone who is skeletal or throwing up too much. There has been people who were obese and lost a ton of weight (and probably would still be considered fat) that died of starvation despite not being underweight because the body eats itself when it does not get enough food causing other problems such as heart problems, kidney, etc.

Plus with anorexia your body is starving and it ends up eating your organs and muscle which leads to heart problems and organ failure and it can not recover if you are not eating anything to help aid recovery of the damage. Whereas with purging although just as dangerous you are eating foods which the body stores and you can not purge everything out its impossible even if you are sick a lot. So the body still has something to cling too.

I see it more as a disorder than a disease, but nonetheless I totally agree.
