I agree. However, I would like to know if Arjun was really brought into the family at the end or was he kept outside.

I LOVED Shahrukh in this one... he was so nice and natural. Like, he didn't bash up those random dudes at the train station, but just moved hurriedly away, like a normal person.

What I really disliked though was the blatant Western-bashing and the in-your-face patriotism. This movie could have been so much better if it toned down a bit and wasn't so stereotypical.

I agree, Shahrukh WAS natural, no over-the-top acting!

I loved it!(I am watching it again right now)

And I agree again: oh my gosh was it EVER patriotic...hahaha [I tried to look past that, and concentrated on Shahrukh ;D ]

I loved Shahrukh in it too. But the film itself, I think the main plot is quite interesting, but it needed a writer/director who actually understands cultures (both Indian and American) and cultural differences, and someone who knows how to write these themes in a natural manner. Subhash Ghai is simply not capable of doing that. I cringed each time someone said: "this is America" or "this is India". It just does not sound natural, and I don't think anyone speaks like that in real life. Loved the performances, music, scenery though. I like the relationship between Shahrukh and Mahima and between Shahrukh and Amrish Puri (not blood-related but still very strong trust- and father/son relationship). I think the film is ultimately a missed chance.

I loved Shah Rukh as Arjun as well. Quiet, subtle, willing to play down his character. The hard part for me is the references to America, when the accents are South African or Australian. It was very irritating for me to watch for the reason only. This is one of my top 10 films for Shah Rukh. The songs are really good.

(Yes, the ET "bike into the sunset things was WTF?" Good film to share with friends.

Shah Rukh was very good. I only watched for him. Even when he's over the top-he's likeable and in this movie,he's very likeable. The Rajiv character-was a tool. His father was a fool. But then so was Ganga's. The grandmother and the woman in the wheelchair proved wisdom can reside in either country. The Indians that worked for and with Arjun were NRI's too, weren't they? There is such a thing as being TOO Indian, when you reach for your saber first and tell you daughter you wish she'd come home in a shroud.

And not every American immediately leers at a girl alone and lunges for her. Remember the truck driver who gave Ganga a ride? He wasn't Indian. These scenes could easily could have been built up by a minute or 2.

Why was Arjun a rock singer in the beginning and then just a nobody as far as the family was concerned , eating in the auto shop? Then suddenly he was sent to L.A. to head up board meetings and given a bungalow and car? He had no home or car before-and his "dad" was worth $550 million? Very bad hobbled together concept. But I'll watch anything with Shah Rukh Khan. To me,he is an honest, decent, loving husband. He has great style and moments of brilliance. My training is in theatre so I have no illusions that he is the finest actor in India. But he entertains me,sincerely. He doesn't attempt Shakespeare. I loved Rabne Banadi Jodi, Billu, Veer Zaara, Dil Se, Paheli, Yes Boss, King Uncle, Om Shanti Om etc. I own all the ones I mentioned and more and truly think he has enriched my life. But this is NOT my favorite.
PS-I like Hritik R and Amir Khan and the Bacchans and many other as well.
