But I thought it was interesting that the Irish woman who went up to the nun and couldn't understand why she wasn't more 'censorious' later said (when she was so ill she couldn't stand) that she thought maybe they all should have stayed at the house.

you can see the Japanese translator shake his head, when he said "lady please"
as to telling Topsey, not to do it.
If I lived back then as a woman, I might have done it but I couldn't say for sure either way. However, knowing what we know about these women now, one would've been better off in the camp. Volunteering often meant day and night non stop rapes and violence.

This is false.
I think what the OP meant to ask is whether one would choose prostitution over living in the camps, and to that I would say I would live in the camps ---- IF I were making an informed choice.
If making a choice between prostitution\rape and an open grave I am being pushed towards, I'm here to tell you OP, that is a choice many women are making each and every day, and many get to have both, without any choice whatsoever.
As it stands, however, these "entertainers" were volunteers at the beginning of the war; and when supplies of these volunteers dried up, the outright kidnapping of women and girls was implemented. Lucky us that we can play little intellectual games on a Sunday afternoon on the backs of these unfortunate women whose very lives become invisible to our ignorant minds.
I object to this question's phrasing for many reasons, one of which is that it disregards the true nature of the choice (as in the context of the film; otherwise it is just asking whether we would rather be: a. Raped or b. Killed, in which case, OP, just fook right off k). Here is how I would phrase it:
If you had the choice between living in a Japanese internment camp OR being kidnapped and taken to a house, photographed on the front porch, beaten and tortured into submission, spending the next X many years with someone raping you 25 to 30 times a DAY, contracting infections and STI's that would render you infertile, and still having only a 25% chance of survival (3/4 of these women and girls died anyway), then, dear imdb readers, which would you choose?
