I haven't seen the movie

I still have to find a copy in our vid shops here

but the book is fab!...

I just finished the book and can't find the film here.
I'm not quite sure I understand the book 100%. It says that Joel picks up the gun and shoots himself but then while he's dreaming we learn that he was bitten by the Cottonmouth.
So, did he die or is he alive and deciding to just stay at the landing?
