Movie vs book

Comparing the movie and the book is quite interesting: one one hand it may seem that the movie follows the book very closely, most scenes in the movie have direct equivalent in the book and most of the dialog appears in the book.

However more detailed comparison shows significant differences. There are several themes which are quite strong in the book but don't appear in the movie:
- How badly Lucinda was treated by many people - just because she was independent woman. For example she was asked not to visit hew own factory without prior warning. And how the same person who asked her not to come to the glassworks invited her with Oscar - as a couple. The message to her was that she had no value by herself, only with a man. And this wasn't related to gambling in any way.
- This largely explains her relationship with Rev Hasset - she valued him because he treated her well and she had to rely on him. He considered her a friend but wasn't interested in marrying her.

These two themes together create background for relationship between Oscar and Lucinda.

Now to the relationship itself. The book shows how relationship gradually develops: initially Lucinda didn't like Oscar, she called him Mr Crab. He didn't fit the image of future husband that she created. When Oscar helped her to maintain the cottage she thought it wasn't 'manly' (in the movie it is shown as fun race). Oscar didn't quite understand Lucinda, he had no idea why she was crying after visit to the glassworks. The book shows two kind and loving people who have significant difficulty communicating. Each of them was afraid of saying something that could be misunderstood, and as a result the misunderstading grew even bigger. In chapter 86 "Christmas Day" Oscar proposed to Lucinda after sermon 'to save your reputation in Balmain'. But it was wrong moment and he said wrong words. Had he proposed to her in the morning with words 'I love you' she could have accepted.

So I am wondering what could have been shown in the movie? It is difficult to show person's thoughts. May be they thought that no-one would watch such movie, I don't know. 'Not enough action'

What do you think about the ending: book vs movie. I think one in the book is too harsh. I felt like tearing these pages from the book: Oh no, it didn’t happen, no, no, no, oh my god, no.
