great movie in search of a great director

Oscar and Lucinda is a superb story, filled with pathos and a real sense of tragedy in an almost shakespearian, greek style (the protagonists start out carrying the seeds of their own fate), its beautifully writen but.. and its a big but.. I personally found the direction to be very flat and somewhat nusympathetic to the tale being told. This story really needed a someone like joh huston in his prime or even Werner Hertzog to bring across its more extreme aspects. in the face of these pathos filled and just plain odd events the direction is far, far too "polite" in a Merchant ivory sort of way. The whole thing hinted at the demented obsessiveness of such movies as Fitzcarraldo but really should have had the courage of its own convictions and gone for a much more intense approach. Good, but a bit of a missed opportunity.

I agree 100% with nachoman. The film was way too soft for all the bizarre occurrences and character quirks. It needed to be directed in a much more kinetic fashion, faster editing, pacing, more gambling and obsessiveness in the last 1/3 of the film.

It felt very merchant ivory, they talk about how brutal this trek through Australia will be and it looks like a disneyland safari, they stop at one point to shoot some aborigines and thats all the danger they really face.

Herzog directing this would have made the penultimate journey exciting and exotic, and would have really driven home the character eccentricities. I liked he film ok, but i do think Fiennes was miscast, he just wasn't likable enough imo. I love fiennes, but hes much better playing the eccentric jerk whos somewhat likable. This performance was just weak sauce with good intentions, but no real charisma, too much of a basket case.

I don't know enough about directing to express an opinion here. But I do wonder how the book ended since one reviewer stated that the movie changed the ending from that of the book.
