Ralph Fiennes is extraordinary

When one watches this movie, it is mind-boggleing to think that this is the same actor who played the cruel Nazi, Amon Goeth in Schindler's List. The difference in these two characters alone, prove what extraordinary range he has as an actor.
Cate Blachette is also amazing. It is wonderful to watch these two interact on screen. I would love to see them team up again.

He is brilliant. I would also recommend Spider. His acting in that is possibly his most powerful.

Tragedy is when I cut my finger. Comedy is when you fall into an open sewer and die.

hahaha...love the quote "(comedy/tragedy)

I have to say his acting in the movie is really excellent. But I don't much like this movie. 6/10

Yes, Peter Carey's novel (which won the Booker Prize for 1988) goes into a lot more detail on the characters, including just why it is the doll Lucinda had as a little girl has such patchy hair as seen in the scene in whcih she shatters the Pricnce Rupert's Drop.

This was definitely one of his best performances, 'nuff said!

What gets me about Ralph Fiennes is how he communicates with his eyes. I decided to prove this to one of my roomies, and sure enough, she shivered at the clip from Schindler's List and cooed at the clip from Quiz Game. One of my favorite actors, and horribly underrated.

You're a sexual Disneyland.

Kragey: Ralph Fiennes does communicate extraordinarily well with his eyes (and what a beautiful shade of blue they are); his mouth is quite expressive as well. He has a way of pursing up his lips that reminds me of one of my favorite classic English actors, David Niven.

He's so versatile, it's easy to understand why some consider him one of the greatest actors alive today.

Incidentally, it's "Quiz Show" rather than "Quiz Game." (I love that movie, too.)

Oh yes, and I find Ralph's "awkwardness" -- and the fact that he doesn't try to hide it -- endearing.

reply

I agree. He is so fragile in this movie; I wanted someone to protect him. In Schindler's list he is cruel and vicious. Someone mentioned that he acts with his eyes. This is true. His eyes and his body language help him create his characters.

reply

Good comparison!! And then compare that to his privileged upper class character in Quiz Show. Can you even imagine anyone playing Oscar? Yes, Ralph Fiennes was excellent in this film

reply

Amazing, indeed.
I can’t think of anyone else that could play Oscar so naturally.

reply

he is my favourite actor. he is superb in everything he does. so beautiful too. I love how as Oscar he is often nervously bouncing his legs. such a great touch to his characterization of Oscar. I had the privilege to see him live in "The Faith Healer". he was incredible

reply

I especially loved the fluttery, uncertain movements of Oscar's hands. Pay attention to his hands the next time you watch this movie. Wow.

I seem to recall reading somewhere that Fiennes felt the awkward Oscar Hopkins is the closest character he's played to his actual nonacting self. Personally I find Fiennes so endearing in this, that Oscar would easily out-charm (for my peculiar taste) any suave ladykiller he's played or ever will play in anything else.

reply

Physically I didn't think he fit the part (not so convincing when someone remarks he looks like a girl or a scarecrow, he's normal looking without the bizarre red hair). But I was surprised that he managed to be endearingly naive and fidgety. I thought he was great in this movie too.

reply

His "bizarre red hair" is quite jarring, but I think it's mostly because we're used to him with his usual hair colour. When I thought about it, there really is no reason we should perceive it as so jarring since if you look at his appearance (e.g., his pale skin and blue eyes) there is no reason, indeed, there is every reason, to perceive that he might actually have been born with that colour hair. Still . . .

reply

He was just amazing in this film. I loved Oscar. I can watch Ralph as Oscar forever.
