The message of the movie

The true message of the movie is about the *beep* health care system that existed at the time.

-Carol unable to get proper medical care for her son, due to the awful coverage of the HMO
-Frank getting bankrupted because excessive medical bills because of the injuries suffered in the assault.

I cant believe that many people missed the point of the movie.

I dont know about ACA but it seems an improvement to what existed at the time.

Good point.

Yeah, as an Australian, I noticed how ridiculous the situation was. Someone gets beaten up so they become bankrupt? It's appalling.

Maybe a little fast in going brakrupcy. But he did by not wanting to paint afterward. He wasn't injured that bad not to paint physically.

Interesting thought about the message/theme of the film. Oh, and it was Simon who was assaulted and bankrupted because of it.

Do you think a second message is that help sometimes comes from very unexpected places? Melvin, for all of his issues, helps both Carol and Simon.

I thought it was about stepping out of one's comfort zone and finding out that taking little risks weren't always bad.

Another BIG message: You can be a bigot and crazy and get a much younger woman to be your lover...

....as long as you are very, very rich and can pay for her child's medical bills with ease.

reply

Well, I was a kid when my family watched this years ago, so there's apparently a lot I missed out on back then.

I sort of disagree. I thought the movie's message was something more like "Life sucks, you have to grab what happiness you can, and work hard and make changes to make the little happiness available happen". And that the healthcare expense issue was only part of the overall "life sucks" thing, there were also chronic illnesses and abusive relationships and bigotry and so on.

And yes CA healthcare has made life better for a hell of a lot of people. Don't get me started.

I thought the movie was more about to suck it up buttercup or this will happen to you.

At the time this movie was made, my wife and I had pretty good health care insurance. The very day our beloved Nobel Prize winning president fixed health care in the U.S. our premiums increased significantly, our copayments doubled, our deductible went from $500.00 a year to $4,000.00 a year for each of us, and we had to find new doctors because the ones we'd had for years wouldn't take our insurance anymore. Now we have *beep* health care.
