What's up with the hate on Helen Hunt ?

I though she was great in the movie, but i seems to be the only one. *sadface*. Can someone explained it to me ?

reply

Classic jealousy? Of such a gorgeous AND talented actress. Maybe they thought that she robbed another actress of the Best Actress Oscar? Perhaps because she's not Jennifer Aniston?

reply

They hate on her because of the peculiarity of her character, the way I read it. Carol wasn't all that likable a character despite Hunt's brilliant performance (which, frankly, was sometimes a bit over the top). Also, poor chemistry with Nicholson didn't help her one bit.

"If you want to improve, be content to be thought foolish and stupid."

reply

People who hate on characters instead of actors are not very bright.
Helen Hunt has been consistently one of the finest actresses of her era.

reply

I think you may have that backwards.... people who hate on the actor instead of the character are not very bright.

Anyway, there is considerable justification for not liking Carol. While she comes from a terrible situation she seems to think that entitles her to having those around her treat her and everyone else exactly how she thinks they should treat her/them. It can be easily argued that Melvin has an even worse situation but she endlessly lashes out at him for anything he does that even approaches something that might be taken as an insult. The sun dress comment is a perfect example, it's Melvin questioning the dress code, not her choice in what to wear and still she acts like she'd just be attacked on a deep, personal level. It's a situation where no one is right, Melvin should have used more tact but Carol's reaction was like punching someone for choosing vanilla ice cream over chocolate just because chocolate is your personal favorite.

reply

Melvin wasn't an asshole because of his OCD, he was an asshole because of his rotten personality. And it sounds like you can relate.

reply

Wow. Serious justification of your personal insults against me, Carol. LOL.

reply

"...she seems to think that entitles her to having those around her treat her and everyone else exactly how she thinks they should treat her/them. "

Honey, everyone thinks that. You think you're entitled to be treated the way you want to be treated, so do I, so does everyone.

Why do you have a problem with this one character thinking the same way?

reply

It's very extreme in her case. She absolutely flies off the handle at the slightest thing. Read my example again. And I'm empathetic enough to understand that not everyone gets treated how they feel they should be treated at every point in time.

reply

You have failed to grasp my point.

And no, not everyone gets treated how they feel they should be treated, and people are usually angry about that, particularly when it involves things like being unable to afford medical treatment for an innocent child. That's something a parent should be angry about, something everyone should be angry about! THIS COUNTRY NEEDS UNIVERSAL HEALTHCARE, THAT'S THE ONLY WAY TO MAKE SURE THAT EVERYONE GETS THE MEDICAL TREATMENT THEY NEED, AND THE PREVENTIVE CARE THAT KEEPS MEDICAL COSTS DOWN.

reply

I didn't fail to grasp your point. You projected your values on me for not responding how you wanted me to then tried to turn a simple point about a character in a movie into a talking point about your pet political cause. Thanks for the laughs. Have a nice day.

reply

WTF is wrong with you? You think that a woman stuck in a terrible situation should be meek and cheerful or something?

reply

I don't think a reasonable human being throws a fit at anything that might be construed as a slight at the drop of a hat. That's what a child does. Is she justified being upset by her son's situation? Sure. The point I made wasn't about that but you flew of the handle on that tangent to make it seem like everything she did was justified. It wasn't.

reply

Because she was such a "beeyatch" throughout the movie. Also, she didn't deserve the Oscar.

reply

Her face looks like an old suitcase that has been dragged by a car by a rope across the desert for 100 miles.

reply

Lol!

reply

My dad doesn't like her because he thinks her breasts look like two rocks hanging in socks. I was surprised when he said this to me, because I have always found her breasts to be quite attractively shaped.

reply

I don't hate her. I like her character. I think for some, it's more that they didn't think she deserved to win the Oscar. I frankly don't think she was really that worthy of it either.

reply

Sexism.

reply

No, you are not the only one. I also enjoyed her performance in this movie.
