The cut sex scene - wasn't it essential to the plot?

I haven't seen the Dutch or the American version since they came out in the theaters in their original theatrical runs, but something about the American version always bothered me.

From what I can remember, by having sex in the morgue (in the Dutch version), Martin had to show her how to get into the morgue. She used this knowledge later on to get into the morgue and save him.

But in the American version, she just somehow knew how to get there (not really addressed as to how).

Am I wrong? Is my memory of this faded?

reply

you are right.

in the uncut version it plays out where he took her down to the morgue and they were going at it.
thats where the semen in the corner came from that Deputy Inspector Bill finds.
thats how Catherine knew where the morgue was.

in the theatrical version the scene is cut. which does raise the question as to how did she know where to check. but you can just assume that she looked all around to find Martin and eventually found them in the morgue.

reply

Ohhhhh. I just assumed that the killer had planted the semen there, having gotten it from Joyce (whom he would have instructed beforehand to save some) from the hand-job scene.

reply

nope that wouldnt make sense because Inspector Cray didnt know about that meeting. that scene was simply to establish that Joyce knew Martin as James and knew James as Martin. as well as explaining her connection to the killer. James had to literally pay her all he had to give in order to find out about the 'guy' who made her pretend she was dead when buying her time.

besides from the shots they showed she was giving him the hand job from outside his pants. so no way she could have collected any of that nor did they imply she did in that moment.

when Inspector Cray questions Martin about the semen they found u can see that Martin gets nervous because hes guilty of putting it there. thats one of the reasons why Inspector Bill believes Martin is guilty as hell.

reply

Ah, now it makes sense to me. When you think about it that handjob semen would have dried on her hand, anyway. Ugh, this film is dirty. Makes you want to have a cold shower, lol

reply

lol. guess it could be seen as dirty. for me it made sense in how thats the sort of last random thing that james needed to see in order to feel a rush of excitement. at the same time he wanted Martin to be apart of it. in the full length version of the film you see more of how james is completely disconnected with life. thats what makes him more of a suspect.

the morgue scene i chalk that up to two people in love who felt the need to hump each other in a place that theyd otherwise never get another chance to. it backfired on martin lol. but well thats the bit that shows Martin is just an average guy. but who could also possibly be the killer.

also it helps add tension for later when Catherine thinks Martin is cheating on her with Joyce.

reply

Good thing they omitted that scene. Why on earth would Martin take her to the morgue to hop on the good foot and do the bad thing? and why would she be up for that?

Maybe Dutch people are into that sort of thing but American audiences would've thought Martin was a sick fvck and wouldn't care what happened to him from that point on.

reply

Your point about Dutch and American audiences is groundless and bigoted. It doesn't matter what _people_ think about Martin's sexuality... without the sex scene there is no explanation as to how his seaman got on to the floor of the morgue. Omitting the scene creates a flaw in the movie, plain and simple.

reply

It does and it doesn't.

They never confirm the semen came from Martin in this movie.

Never heard about the Dutch version. I wonder if it is anything like the Danish version ;-)
