when she hooked up with the brazilian at the same time alan hooked up with the student, i thought, "oh, this should be interesting to see how they get out of these relationships so they can meet and fall in love..." the way they resolved alan's relationship made sense and gave closure, but i didn't like the way they handled the other relationship. she gets stuck in traffic and misses her plane, and that's the only reason she meets alan? i know, her mom met her dad the same way, but still...that poor, sad guy on the plane!

Well, if my memory serves correctly, she obviously had second thoughts about leaving/deciding to leave her present life so suddenly. That's why (hesitance) she was late to leave the apartment on time and then got stuck in the traffic. As for the Brazilian guy...one moment he was sort of sad, and the next moment he was flirting with another woman sitting next to him!
So, you can relax, there's no poor sad brazilian guy there.

I think the movie sets up Erin's hesitancy over Andre. The day before his flight, he calls while she's packing. Lots of sweet talking mixed at one point with his sense of destiny in their meeting. She doesn't want to hear it and hangs up in the middle of a sentence.

And yes, she would know traffic conditions en route to the airport still uncertain...
