What bothers me is the actor who plays the Brazilian guy, André. He doesn't speak Portuguese. He speaks some kind of "portunhol". I still don’t understand how something like this can happen. Low budget? Naiveté? Careless?
I agree. There are thousands of Brazilians living in America and many of them are or want to be actors. Why didn't they employ one of them? Furthermore, that guy keeps saying "in my country this", "in my country that". Come on! Who says that? Would it be very dificult to say just "in Brazil"? Finaly he says all the time that he wants to go back to Sao Paulo and describes the arrival in Brazil, the clouds, the turbulence (?), etc, and the Corcovado. But the Corcovado is in Rio de Janeiro! This is like describing the arrival in Los Angeles quoting the Statue of Liberty...
It sucks to hear bad portuguese in american movies, but it is worse when they think we speak spanish here...

This is just a thought....but maybe the guy in the movie is supposed to be a fraud, a smooth talking foreigner, and the poor language and mistaken geography are clues to his sham to movie goers who are intelligent enough to pick up on them.

If he was after her just for sex, I think he wouldn't have gone through the lengths that he did, such as buying plane tickets. He was just a hopeless romantic (which is not necessarily a more stable thing to be).
As for the ethnic and cultural inconsistancies, well, he DID say he was adopted.

All the guys she meets are "poseurs" - that's the point of her pathetic dating life and part of the (dark) humor of the film. So, he is too: He's a b.s. artist just as likely from Brasil as he is from Paris. He's probably from the Bronx.
And just the sort of guy her mother would fall for - also part of her characterization as a woman becoming independent from her mother (while still falling into the clutches of "fate" ;)

Sorry this is seven years late, but I agree with the posters who say the guy was a fraud. I don't speak Portuguese, but I can differentiate it from Spanish, and your recognition that he was speaking Portunhol was the last piece of evidence I needed that he was indeed a poser.
The main evidence is that, as others have noted, almost every guy Erin met until the end was in some way a fraud (the therapist was just clever script humor -- he seemed OK). And the way he kept mixing up the details of "my country" AND used the same corny approach on the woman on the plane were also indicative. As were his packing instructions to Erin: "Just bring a little two-piece." Hardly the height of romantic love. Finally, there is a very large Portuguese community in Massachusetts, which was actually my first tip off that he may have just been a local guy posing as an exotic Brazilian.
In any case, I love this movie. If only every rom-com was this sweet and smart.

Wait again! I just found out that Hope Davis is not really a nurse, but an actress! More lies! I'm sure there are many REAL nurses interested in acting who could have played this role. Now I'm beginning to suspect that the balloonfish name is not really Puff as they want us to believe. Have you seen the "goofs" section here in IMDB? It says that the subway map shown on the movie is WRONG. WRONG! This movie has nothing but lies!
Geez, people, lighten up! This is a movie, a work of fiction, it's all make believe. If you have trouble distinguishing fact from fiction, you should get professional help :-)

It sounded like Portuguese to me and would to most Americans, who are much more familiar with Spanish. I had to look up "portunhol" and learned it's a hybrid of Spanish and Portuguese that is spoken in border regions between Brazil and its neighbors. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portu%C3%B1ol Since he did actually fly to Brazil, it seems reasonable that he is from there and grew up speaking that way most of the time. I also think he was less a poser and more of a romantic fool, as someone suggested. I felt he was genuinely looking for love, not sex, but his methods didn't work very well.
