Does anyone else think this marriage will eventually end in divorce?

I'm not trying to be cynical, it just doesn't seem like Michael loves Kim enough. He has too many leftover feelings for Julianne, though it wouldn't work out with her either. I just think when you're really in love you're not choosing between two women because the choice is obvious. It seems like Michael would benefit from a fresh start, finally putting his feelings for Julienne to bed and finding the one woman who can knock Julienne off that pedestal.

It would probably last longer than Julianne and George's relationship.

I do. Not that Michael and Jules wouldn't have lasted either.

Yes! I'm watching this film again at the mo and was thinking exactly the same thing. I reckon they'd be divorced within 5 years and he'd get back with Julia's character.

You are being generous my friend -- I was thinking that they would be lucky to make it a full year. It would end very quickly in an annulment so Kimmy and her family could argue that Kimmy had never *really* been married. With her money and her looks, Kimmy would be a hot commodity on the marriage market. And the thing with Michael had all the signs of being a rebellious teenager sort of thing to separate from her father. Once she and Michael were out in the real world, Kimmy would resent quitting college, which always seemed ridiculous, to follow this kind of a loser guy around to various sporting events.

I don't think that Michael would have ended up with Julia's character either. She had obviously been rejecting him for years (stringing him along?); she broke off their initial romantic relationship and in classic narcissistic fashion never wanted him until she thought someone else might be taking him away. It seems pretty clear that his feelings for her were still romantic but he had given up. The sudden marriage to Kimmy "the perfect girl" seemed desperate to me, like he was doing something, anything to get beyond his attachment to Julia's character. The film glosses over (mostly) the very serious issues that would have crippled the marriage to Kimmy. Michael seemed far too immature and stubborn in a stupid way (I'm not given up my job for anything!!! Because!) to make a good spouse much less a family man later. He was too willing to let Kimmy sacrifice key life events, like finishing college, so he could continue on the same life path without pause. The whole idea with marriage is that both parties make compromises; all the compromises here seemed to be Kimmy's compromises.

Just watched the movie for the first time again and years and yes (being much older while watching this time) I would say that I think they probably didn't last long. It just seemed like Michael still had feelings for Julianne but could not make the quick decision to end things with Kim. I think that after he thought things out though he probably does realize that he doesn't feel the same way for Kim.

Every time I watch the ending I picture them getting divorced. Kim was way too young, only 20! He was 8 years older than her. Plus she would have to quit school and forget about her own career. He also had deep feelings for Jules and kim would forever be a crazy jealous wife after that kiss. Doomed relationship!

I don't think so. I mean, a lifetime spent with that giggling, far-too-saccharine, annoying woman? Seriously? I mean, maybe if he was on strong sedatives. But still ...

Hah! Because alprazolam (Xanax) is like the Elmers glue for relationships? If someone starts taking mind-altering psychotropic drugs, prescription or not; notonly is divorce right on the table, but rehab, alimony, divorce court...

Maybe so but I don't think Julianne would be the reason for their breakup.

I think his choice was obvious. Aside from the initial shock of Julianne telling him she was in love with him, he never seemed torn between the two of them. His reaction was basically, "Thanks. Now let's find Kim."

I think his and Kim's biggest problem was her age and naivety. She was willing to give up her goals and career for him, and he didn't even seem all that grateful. He was kind of a dick actually, when she asked him to work for her father. Instead of considering the idea, he gets up and yells at her until she has to beg him to forgive her. I'd have walked away after that.

Yes. Mainly from Kimmie's POV - her not finishing school, and living a new life in a different financial status unlike how she grew up - will ultimately begin to weigh on her. She married for love (which is beautiful), but may not be enough down the road.

Kimmy becomes trophy Stepford Wife, after a year or two Michael meets up with Jules again, Jules becomes mistress. Kimmy finds out but blames herself. Kimmy overdoses on whatever housewives take these days, Michael marries Jules.

Sometimes a movie or tv show plot is so stupid that only the stupid can understand it.
