How come people are confused by the time setting?

I don't get why this is brought up on this board frequently, there's clearly a 96 model lincoln town car early in the movie and right at the end when the house collapses. Just saying.

It's done in the style of mid 20th century, but there's on obvious modern technology. It's a surrealistic setting. I didn't take it to be set in reality.
