Celeste's Husband/ Laurel's Dad

I don't understand him... he seemed genuinely nice, level headed, and normal. He was kind to his daughter, he liked his son-in-law. Why did he stand by Celeste's side? Why didn't he ever put his foot down?

His role seemed really odd to me.
