True Story?

Has anybody found any information on this crime yet? I can't find anything to substantiate it as being a true story.

The German www.filmevona-z.de film database says that this is really a true story.

Mother Knows Best is based on the true story of Lee Goldsmith of Boca Raton, Florida. In February 1989, the then 67-year-old retiree tried to have her son-in-law David Brownstein killed.

It is at the end of the movie text comes up saying that she went to jail and that laurel hasnt spoken to her mom since.

reply

I've seen that as well, but they must be using fictitious names or something. I can't find anything out.

reply

i googled celeste cooper and couldn't come up with anything either.

reply

At no stage throughout the movie that I could see, did anyone claim it was a true story. The fact that the plot was woven around Celeste, the liar of the Century, probably compelled the producers to add that text for a giggle. People keep telling us, "Don't believe everything you read." I enjoyed it though and was relieved to see I wasn't the only one to "Google it."

reply

At the beginning of the film a paragraph pops up saying something along the lines of "While some events were fictionalised, this film is based on a true story." Or something like that...

I blame it on the nargles.

reply

you must not have read the trailer that mama was convicted of attempted murder and was sentenced to 5 years in prison. a second trailer states that laurel and her mother had not spoken since.

When she said that in the movie, I vaguely remembered seeing police surveillance footage on the news and hearing that line.

Thanks Lmartinez778-1.

Wow, Lee Goldsmith was the ultimate mother-in-law from hell.

I don't know whether they added it recently, but I'm watching it on TV in the UK and they said at the beginning that it is a fictional account based on actual events.

That is a great site! Lots of interesting info about true crime and docudramas.

I just saw the film here in the UK and at the beginning it said that the names haave been changed (to protect the identity I guess) but it IS a true story. So Googling the names won't provide anything...!

reply

definately a true story - based on Lee Goldsmith http://www.geocities.com/murder_stories/mother_knows_best_movie.html?1045403486890

Woman was a little older than Joanna Kerns was portrayed in the movie but she only got 5 1/2 years in jail due to frail health and age.

Nice one Lmartinez...who provided this link
http://tinyurl.com/5tp5cu

Incase that page ever goes dead, I'll put the basics of the case up here

In 1990 Lee Goldsmith tried to arrange the killing of her son in law David Brownstein in Broward county, Florida.

She was sentenced to 5 1/2 years,
Apparently she was unwell with heart problems and only went to prison in 1993 to be released on parole in June 1995.

reply

Wow. Three years from the crime to when she actually set foot in jail...and then she only spends two years there?

Nice, swift justice there.

reply

She basically got a lenient sentence because of her health??? That's BULLSH*t! Criminals die in prison everyday so that makes no sense to me. What a crooked backwards county. I think it was more her wealth than her health that got her released early. If she died while serving her sentence for trying to get an innocent man killed, so what??? She broke the law and should have paid fully and completely for it. Psycho b***h.
