There is not an inch of film in avatar that is not derivative. Mononoke on the other hand is a beautifully crafted original story framed as an historical legend. Just magical.

I understand the comparison for the "go native" common theme, but they are radically different in development and conclusion. Plus there are no messianic messages in DWW, nor the "mighty whitey" trope. i would prefer not to compare them at all.
