Why did the Judas breed insect abduct Dr. Susan Tyler but...? Spoiler!
did not kill her? I figure they spared the spoon kid because he made those rattling sounds that resembled their own, but what's the deal with Susan?

shareSusan herself foreshadows the reason why 15 minutes into the movie when she gives the one bug kid a lesson on termites. she explains how insects like termites only kill in defense of the nest which is the soldier's caste job. When something is intended to be food it is only stunned then taken still alive and delivered to the pantry chamber of the nest for later consumption. The Judas that took her (and the priest too) was probably a worker on a foraging excursion seeing as the pantry was filled with rotting half eaten corpses indicating they were low on food.
The one that breaks into Susan's lab was either a worker or soldier sent to rescue the baby the bug boys sold to her.
The one's that killed the Bug boys and Peter's partner were defending eggs since the boys were trying to steal an egg case and the latter had the misfortune of stumbling into a nursery chamber filled with them. I agree that Chuy was spared because his ability to mimic their sounds with his spoons which probably made them think he was one of the colonies hatchlings. Sadly in doing so he got Manny killed since the Judas that killed the old man probably did so thinking it was protecting Chuy.
Great answer. I was going to reply to the OP myself but you've covered everything.
