What's better? This or Simon Birch?

Both similar movies, both I have seen. Simon Birch seems to have more of a "Hollywood" cliché to it, in my opinion. The score for that is a little over the top but still good. The Mighty feels more natural. Regardless, I like both movies and think they're great. Just a shame not a lot of people have seen The Mighty. The score for this really feels unique to mention also.

I think I like Simon Birch a little more.

I much preferred The Mighty. In part, though, this is probably because Simon Birch was based (very loosely and incompletely) upon one of my favorite books, John Irving's "A Prayer For Owen Meany." Irving himself was so displeased with the adaptation that he refused to allow the title to be used.

That's not correct. John Irving mentioned in an article by CNN that he suggested the name 'Simon Birch' be used because he said it just wouldn't be possible to make A Prayer for Owen Meany into a motion picture. Second point, Irving praised the release of Simon Birch but it was good in its own right.

And in the interview I read, Irving specifically said that "Birch" was deeply flawed because the filmmakers chose to essentially delete half the story.

reply

That's why the movie is not called A Prayer for Owen Meany.

Yeah that is crazy.

I finally saw Simon Birch and it was okay but I wasn't highly impressed. I LOVE this movie, however.

I think it's much better.

Getting ready to watch it again soon.

How did you come about knowing Simon Birch? Was it based from watching The Mighty?

I probably saw a trailer for simon birch, or heard of it somehow, when It first came out, but never saw it. Somehow I got the impression I wouldn't care for it. But it's in my library and I kept seeing it as I'd scan for movies to rent.

Before I moved her.. to THIS library... I'd come across "The Mighty" on a Sunday Afternoon on TV and thought it was a sweet story. I forget if I saw the whole thing that time or not. But it was also in my library. Hard to remember (LOL) But I THINK I didn't know the name and somehow looking at the video in the library I figured out it was the one I'd seen on TV and rented it again... and again.. I really love this movie.

FInally, after seeing Simon Birch in the library for months, I decided to give it try, after reading a bit more about it. I think I figured out it was kinda similar to The Mighty, and I like Oliver Platt. So anyway I gave it a try. I wasn't that impressed. It relied on crudity for humor, the story wasn't nearly as realistic, touching, or original as The Mighty.. I dunno.. it was OKAY.. I don't feel like I wasted my time necessarily, but I think it could have been alot better.

The only thing simon Birch had over The Mighty was using a boy that really had Morqurio's I think Kierran CUlkin did a GREAT job in 'The Mighty" But if I hadn't seen Simon Birch and read up on it, I would have NEVER thought that "Freak's" condition was supposed to be a form of dwarfism.. I got "crippled" from Kierran, but certainly not Dwarf. Anyway.. Mighty 10/10.. Simon Birch 5/10..

Both movies suck, but am glad that the most annoying characters die in each movie. Especially glad Simon Birch died, I couldn't stand him, little midget.

When I was a kid a friend of mine really liked The Mighty but I had already seen Simon Birch and loved that movie. I watched The Mighty but didn't really like it. I might watch it again though, I saw it when I was like 10.

Freak is superior because he wasn't a murderer like Simon.

This movie had a faster pace. At least I thought it did. Simon Burch is also more religion based. That doesn't bother me, but some people don't like it.
