Anyone else agree? this film had class, sex, multi-culture, style, and a top all of that - good cinematography. I dont think its often you come across films like this from the UK or Ireland.
Id put this up with American Indie classics like Pulp Fiction, Down By Law, Before Sunrise, ect. Probably might buy it sometime.
I agree! Just watched Metroland this evening. Of course, I LOVE everything Christian Bale is in. He's my favorite. The movie had a great message. Christian was amazing in it, so was Emily Watson...they have wonderful chemistry. The soundtrack was the bomb. Loved it. Especially the Paris track....have been there..always wanted to spend more time...although...I know it's probably more fantasy than reality...As "Chris" learned...he chose real love, the woman he had fallen in love with, and not just good sex. He chose commitment, covenant, in the end. I admire him for that, and believe that the actor, Christian Bale, is very much like that in real life....love for his wife, strong commitment....hey, that's where it's at.
i'm in the (united) states, and i don't know if this is the "best film out of uk," but i think - as far as contemporary cinema goes - it's right up there. this was, i believe, bale and watson before they became well known over here in the u.s. and zylberstein does a great job playing the late 60's-era, 20-something "engage" parisienne. the first time i saw this film a few years ago, i'd agreed with the bale character's final life choice...a few years later, i'm not so sure. that's the beauty of the movie. though the character's conflict isn't original, and we've seen movies about the same subject before, it does it all in a fresh way, with (at the time) fresh faces. it's also one of the few movies available these days giving us any stories out of 1960's europe.
I catched it on tv ages ago. Christian Bale should do more stuff like this.
I particulary like how they were able to get hold of the little things that make the film stand out such as using an old asda shop and the asda shopping bags which makes the time difference believable.
I'm sure scripts like Metroland are out there, but probably in the bottom of a slush pile. It seems that any movie out today about male/female relationships has to be framed around the notion of a blockbuster romance that underestimates the IQ of the movie-going audience. That certainly makes Metroland quite a gem.
I'd love to see Christian Bale make another movie like this--or have more of his admirers watch Metroland to see a whole different side of his acting ability.
