You are correct. It has stayed with me for years. How many films can stay in your memory since 1997?
It is both artistic and brilliant filmmaking. If it had been in English, it would have made some money. But that would be pandering. The trouble JS took to combine Spanish and various indigenous dialects was worth it, and gave this film much more authenticity than it would have otherwise had. This isn't just an "art film," it is art.
