I shot the little girl

Because she's hanging out in a bad neighbourhood and carrying books about quantum physics.

Oh, well I guess that's fine.

You could tell he was kind of thumbing his nose at the whole thing.

I always loved the way Rip Torn asked the question:

"May I ask why you felt little Tiffany deserved to die?" (paraphrasing, said in a mournful way)

Logic tracks.

Best scene in the movie!

I mean it is unusual for a little girl to have Quantum Physics books. Plus as a member of MIB you know that there are good aliens and bad aliens. And some of them disguise themselves as humans. So if you were investigating strange activity in an area and you spotted a little girl carrying Quauntum Physics books, she probably is an alien.

My guess? He was probably graded a B+ on that test because he shot Tiffany. I don't think you're supposed to shoot *at all*. NYPD, Marines, etc.: these guys know how to shoot. They aren't testing that at all. They wanted to make sure that he would look past the monsters and scary freaks and find real potential threats. But I bet their ideal candidate is somebody who never pulls the trigger at all.

The question then is, "Why didn't you shoot?" and the answer, "He's working out, he's sneezing, and she's suspicious and I'm bringing her in for questioning."

Maybe, but if you look at that scene closely, Zed did seem genuinely pleased with Jay's rationale behind why he chose to shoot Tiffany instead of all the other cartoonish-looking aliens. It really wasn't till Jay starts giving him attitude about it and tells him to get off his back that he then becomes displeased.

Also, when Zed goes to talk to Kay about it, his point of discussion there, is Jay's attitude, not that he shot Tiffany. So I think Jay was in fact meant to shoot Tiffany, or at the very least, whether he shot the girl or not didn't matter. What matters was whether he saw through all the phony, cartoony aliens or not, of which he clearly did.

reply

You're right. Zed's reaction is definitely that Jay was supposed to pick up on those clues and blast Tiffany into next week, and that he wasn't supposed to blow away a thing that looked like a monster.
