Why did they try to stop the bug alien leaving Earth?

Was watching this last night and wondered why they tried to stop cockroach bug leaving Earth. Think about it, that Arkelian ship was ready to destroy Earth in order to stop the galaxy from falling into anyone elses hands. Why didn't MiB's just let the ship leave, then tell the Arkelians the galaxy was on that ship? The Arkelians would have chased/destroyed the ship and Earth would be safe. Trying to keep bug ship (and the galaxy) on Earth was not a smart move!!

The answer is simple there would be no exciting third act. But I have to applaud you for pointing out the obvious.

The Earthlings were held accountable because they housed these aliens. All the Aliens in New York they were obligated to manage. So it was there fault if something would happen to the galaxy because they were in charge & the galaxy was on the earth
