Movies That Were Better Than Their Source Material

Movies often change and cut out alot of things from the book/comic/game it was based off. But every so often you get a movie that is way better than the original.

I think Men In Black is a good example, the comics were okay. But considering there were only six issues it didn't get a chance to fully explore everything.

Forrest Gump is more realistic than the book and alot more memorable

The Crow, the comic was kind of lame.

Transformers, it's fifty/fifty with the fans but I think it was an excellent update of the series.

What other movies were better than their source?

1408, The Talented Mr. Ripley, The Shining

Oh, and I think 'The Wizard of Oz' movie was way better than the book.

The Shawshank Redemption.

Oh, and No Country for Old Men.

Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory.

Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory.

Which one? Depp's had the better/truer story (mostly, stupid ending...) but Wilder's Wonka was better IMO.

Regardless I think the book was fantastic so in my eyes it is unlikely an adaptation would be able to top it.

How has nobody mentioned the Godfather? The book was pretty good, but nowhere near the masterpiece that the first two films are.

American Psycho. The source grew tedious while the movie's sharp satire and wit was riveting throughout. The brilliant Mary Harron, who directed AP and co-wrote the screenplay, deserves the lion's share of credit.

Fight Club. Chuck Palahniuk actually said he was a little embarrassed because the movie added so much more depth to his characters, but he enjoyed the movie immensely.

Jaws is, by far, better than the book. The book had a lot of unneeded material.

The Jack Ryan films are far better than Clancy's books. They cut them down to the essential plot and character and jettisoned the excessive padding of Clancy's stories. Not to mention, they created a more believable scenario in Patriot Games, by substituting a royal relative and government offical for Charles and Diana. The Royal Family travel with SAS protection, so an attack on them is going to playing if a greatly different manner. The substitution worked better with the novel's plot.

Blade Runner.

The novel is kind of dull and feels really dated now.
