Vincent D'Onofrio (bug in the Edgar suit, lol) deserved an oscar.

Sure, Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith were excellent. But the way Vincent D'Onofrio played the bug is incredible (the facial expressions, voice, sound effects, etc.). I mean, I can't even think of any other characters in film that he could've used as a reference in studying for that role. Yet he pulled it off quite nicely.

Lol, watching Edgar get more and more fvcked up as time goes on cracks me up everytime I watch it.

I agree..I love the scene where he goes to ask for the lost cat, when the guy was swatting the flies.

reply

Absolutely, his delivery is flawless. The other guy did a pretty good job in that scene as well. Which is probably why they brought him back for the sequel.

He's so good in fact that I thought they switched actors when Edgar became the bug in the Edgar suit. His transformation and dedication to the character is amazing.

Yeah, I really believe he had the hardest role to play in the movie. That's why I started a thread about him. I think because Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones are such huge stars (plus they did an excellent job themselves), that Vincent D'Onofrio's performance is generally underappreciated and underrated. MIB wouldn't have been nearly as good as it is without him.

I flipped when I found out it was the actor the whole time.

I'm usually into art house films but I am a big fan of the first MIB film for that exact reason. I cannot believe the man who played Edgar so brilliantly (his physicality was fantastic) and was excellent as Private Pyle in Stanley Kubrick's 'Full Metal Jacket' was never a major Hollywood star. What on earth happened?

He's been in a lot of stuff. And his acting is on par with greats like Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones. So the only thing I can think of as to why he never quite reached their level of star status, is because he doesn't have the classic pretty boy/Tom Cruise/Brad Pitt type looks. Which sucks, because he can outperform most pretty boys.

Yes, I refer to 7-Up at 'sugar water' in honour of the bug in the Edgar suit.

My intro to D'Onofrio was his excellent episode of "Homicide:Life on the Street".

Yes, sir, I'm going to do nothing like she's never been done before!

I first saw D'Onofrio in Full Metal Jacket (1987). And I remember hearing that he put on about 30 - 40 lbs of fat for that role, specifically so he would have the heavy-set, out of shape look that the role required. I knew then that he was a very dedicated actor.

D'Onofrio was indeed excellent as Edgar. Although I couldn't help being reminded of Stephen King's rare acting excursion as the hillbilly in Creepshow. Mysterious object plummets to earth, idiot farmer investigates, unfortunate consequences ensue. Maybe there was some connection in the writing.

The guy is very underrated ...

And if, you know, your history...it's enough to make your heart go whoooooahh

Vincent has been called 'the actor's actor' before. He's awesome in everything.

Though The Cell - at best an 'ok' movie - he does a freakin' amazing job.

Agreed. He's one of the most versatile and underrated actors out there.

Was he good in this? Yes. Oscar-worthy? Absolutely not.

reply

yes, his performance was truly oscar worthy. it is amazing.

reply

Agreed. His take on malevolent comedy is second to none - an alien bent on conquering - er, destroying - the earth and throwing out unforgettable sarcastic one-liners at every possible opportunity. Pulling the skin tight at the back of his head to ask "Is that better?" was really something, as was the "care to see the fly get even?" quip,, but the whole "You idiots! You don't get it... I've won, you don't matter, in fact in about 5 seconds you won't even be matter" takes the cake! One of my all-time favorite characters.

And his monologue to the exterminator :

You know I've noticed an infestation here....everywhere I look in fact; just barely evolved, barely conscious pond scum....totally convinced of their own superiority, as they scurry about in short...pointless....lives....

Well yeah.....don't you want to get rid of them?

OHHHHHh, in the worst way!!!!

Lol, awesome performance.

Borrowed my nephew's dvd & watching it now. Came here to say the same thing, he's awesome as the country bumpkin turned alien. Completely stole the whole movie.

reply

Definitely!!! Vincent plays the character so damn good!!! I dont think any other actor could of pulled this off. Any other actor would probably made the villain cheesy & laughable. Vincent's performance in this is so underrated. I dont know why people only focus on Will Smith & Tommy Lee Jones. Vincent steals every seen he's in too

I know Im gunna get so much sh*t from this, but Vincent as the cockroach is better than Health Ledger as the Joker, in my opinion.

I'd say they're on par with each other (which is a huge compliment to D'Onofrio). Though I believe Vincent D'Onofrio is a better overall actor than Heath Ledger was. Heath Ledger's Joker was about his only standout role. D'Onofrio seems to do a spectacular job in almost every role he lands.

I'm a big D'Onofrio fan, and I will agree that he is "better" than Ledger only because D'Onofrio has a longer track record and, unfortunately for Ledger, that will only continue to grow.

I didn't really think too much about Ledger at first, but I have to say that after watching him play Ennis Del Mar in Brokeback Mountain, I thought he did a tremendous job. He really impressed me, and I went into the film not expecting much of him.

D'Onofrio is a superb actor, but he has to be given material to work with. I saw him in last year's The Judge, but his part was underwritten and he was underused, so I cannot say that he was "spectacular" in it although he did his usual fine job. "Spectacular" would have meant that he made that one-dimensional supporting part memorable.

But I will note how damned good he can be: I first saw Men in Black in the theater, and during the closing credits, I turned to my then-wife and exclaimed, "Hey! Vincent D'Onofrio was in that!" She just laughed and said, "He was 'Egger'!" D'Onofrio can inhabit a role so deeply that you--or at least I--forget who it is who is playing the role. With Tom Cruise, by contrast, you know you're getting Tom Cruise no matter the role. But D'Onofrio is not superhuman, only a terrific actor.

It is really sad when actors and actresses put out unique performances and don't get any recognition for them because they're not considered mainstream (or socially acceptable even). Then other actors straddle along playing average Joes and have awards (or recognition) thrown at them. At least Ledger's performance netted an Oscar. Vincent D'Onofrio didn't seem to get a lot of attention for this movie at all unfortunately. It also sounded like a ginormous pain the rear to suit up for. And while the chemistry between Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith is classic, this movie would have quite possibly just been another MiB II (Serleena) without D'Onofrio. He really helped to balance it out.

reply

Completely agree. He's a great actor. Even the cell was bearable because of him. Why on earth they cast Jennifer Lopez to star along side him has always been a mystery to me 🤷‍♀️
