Why not just kill Laurel?

The bad guy has a hostage and the whole world is about to be destroyed. They should of just shot right through her and killed them both.

I think the answer to this might be in MIB3, remember the early scene where they are in the Chinese restaurant and J throws up a table to protect himself from the bolt from the space gun? It evaporated the table but apparently didn't go through to do any damage to J.

Space guns in MIB are very powerful, they seem to evaporate anything in their path. But apparently the bolt doesn't keep going, it evaporates whatever it hits then dissipates itself, thus not functioning like projectile weapons that are popular on Earth.

So if they tried to shoot through Laurel, it would have just evaporated her and not the Bug. And the Bug had a gun, he might have shot back before they could fire a second time. Although he just had an Earth revolver that he got from that repo guy he killed earlier, it still would have been effective against J and K. This is of course provided that J and K's weapons in MIB1 functioned the same as those they had in MIB3.

That and, I suppose they wanted to free her if they could. "Let her go *beep* eater!"

Even if they weren't concerned about the girl (but I think they were at that point) they might have been concerned about wrecking or damaging 'The Galaxy', which Edgar-Bug held in one hand.
