It's Disappointing

After watching some episodes of the TV series and the McHale's Navy movies that starred the original cast and were filmed in the '60s, this '90s version is a real disappointment. Ernest Borgnine only makes a cameo appearance here. Tim Conway is nowhere to be seen. And unfortunately, Joe Flynn died quite a few years ago. The cast of this '90s version of McHale's Navy isn't even in the same league with Ernest, Tim or Joe. And what's with the setting being off the coast of Mexico or Cuba or whatever? The real McHale's Navy setting is the south Pacific during WWII.

Err, it would make no sense for a film about Sailors to consist of a bunch of old men.

Borgnine wasn't simply a cameo, cameos usually have 0-1 lines in a film. He's on camera in many scenes and has many lines.

I have no doubt this film was worse than the original. It wasn't a great movie. I recently re-watched it as some have here and found it wasn't terrible though.

You're giving it a hard time for not being a carbon copy of the original, and many others would complain if it were. Just judge it by its own merit. Which isn't much.

It was set on a fictional island near Cuba but also near the American Virgin Islands and somewhere else I forget. I don't know why they always go extra generic, it's not like an entire nation is going to sue them for their likeness.
