It probably looks better today than when it came out amidst a lot of other films of similar types. Today we just don't get this kind of film anymore so it's far more appreciated.
That said, the script is a bit of a mess. I guess it's kind of a Shakespeare in Love, but as a tragedy instead of a comedy.
After listening to the many rhyming couplets of the French plays, I sure am glad that tendency didn't take root in English plays. Shakespeare uses them once in a while for special emphasis only. Hearing them constantly though must get extremely tiring, especially if it's not a comedy.
