Chris

I was a little confused about the ending. The mother of Chris said she was her daughter, Christine. To me it seemed like Chris wanted to be a girl too. Another poster on this board said she was a girl who wanted to be a boy. The actor looked like a boy to me.

What do you think?

Other then that, fabulous movie. I loved how in the end both parents supported Ludo. Family support makes life so much easier.

I agree. I was upset at first when I saw Chris hitting, or trying to hit Ludo with the rocks with the slingshot. But then I was glad Chris wanted to play with Ludo, and even happier when it is revealed that Chris was a girl. It was very obvious that she very much wants to be a boy. She was visibly upset when her mother called her Christine in front of Ludo. I think it is great that Chris is there because she can be a very wonderful friend for Ludo, since he doesn't really have friends. Especially friends with gender issues.
I have to say that I was really pleased when the parents were like its no big deal that they changed costumes...so hopefully they are in a more understanding area. :)

The fact that their neighbors have the same issue and seems to accept it, make it easier for Ludo's parents to let him be. Tears of joy came out of my eyes at the end. Wonderful!

I agree with Makandal. When one of the mothers asked Ludo's mom, "Why are you getting so upset?" she stopped yelling at Ludo and realized it wasn't such a big deal. I think initially they were so upset with Ludo because they lived in the same neighborhood as the dad's boss and they were trying so hard to impress him and not doing a very good job of it. It's hard to just BE when clearly there is so much disapproval from your neighbors.

I also wonder if the boss' son was gay and his parents were trying to sweep that issue under the rug and didn't want little Ludo around because there was an obvious attraction between the two boys.

I was confused about that as well. I thought Chris as a boy but wanted to be a girl like Ludo (which was why her mother called her "Christine" and "my daughter"). But when she wanted to do the costume swap, I figured it out.

This thread is so old, but I just finished watching this gem and... Christine was a girl (and born a girl). And, unlike Ludovic, I don't think she wanted to be a boy.. I think she was just a tomboy.

I hate so much about the things that you choose to be.

That's actually an interesting point this movie brings up. In it, we see a boy who feels he ought to be a girl. Because he wants to wear skirts or dresses or earrings or wear his hair long, he is made fun of and considered weird.

Now imagine that a girl decides she ought to have been a boy. Would it be so weird if she cut her hair short and wore pants and a shirt? There's no more damage in a boy wearing a skirt than a girl wearing pants, so why's one considered more acceptable than the other?

But yeah, I think Chris was transgendered too, if only because of her reaction when her mother referred to her in a feminine manner. If she were just a tomboy, I somehow don't think that would get such a negative reaction.

I, too, had initially seen Chris as just a tomboy - although that probably is due to the wider social acceptance in the Western World of "tomboy" girls over "feminine" boys. But that is a good point, that Chris was annoyed when his mother called for him using the full name "Christine."

However, I don't necessarily believe Jerome was gay. His sister had likely died not long beforehand (I imagine less than a year), and he might have simply enjoyed being around a feminine presence that gravitated towards him - in this case, transgendered Ludovic. Although a homosexual identity is not out of the question, of course.
