Sean Penn..

I just watched this movie, and one thing I don't get. What purpose does Sean Penn's character serve?
We see him in the beginning, rambling about how people are like magnets, then he disappears not to be seen again. Was his speech to be some kind of prologue? It just seemed kind of out of place, random, yet if it was a sort of prologue, a bit pretentious and silly.
