Had Potential - SOME SPOILERS)

I finally saw this film.. I loved the original compared to this.
however this sequel had potential, I think in theory the story was great.. but the director was unable to carry it out.. she was trying but did not succeed.

I really like the fact that instead of having mickey fall in love with another woman - the sequel instead is a continuation of the love story between John and Elizabeth, since their relationship ended he has been unable to have a real relationship with other women. It also shows that pain, regret and sorrow he is going through for treating her the way he did.

every woman he sees he tries to make her into elizabeth
it was a very sad love story - I felt the sadness in his character... angie everheart's character however didn't understand that his relationship with liz was deeper than the games, etc. he kept saying, "you don't understand do you"

I liked the ending when he looks out that river.. perhaps imagining what could have been. He leaves this gorgeous woman in bed because he is unable to let the love of his life go - that's love - at least part of my definition of it.

the soundtrack... esp the song at the end is very good.

the film wasn't terrible... but it pales in comparison to the original.
Angie Everheart's performance was terrible by the way.

I agree. The first one is better & I never even saw the first one. I saw this one & I only like it becuz of Mickey Rourke. I was only 12 when I saw this,I'm 21 now. When it comes between Kim Basinger & Angie Everhart,I think Kim wins. I mean,I think Angie is cool & I know it's an erotic thiller but she acted like a total slut in this movie & from what I saw on youtube.com,in the first movie,Kim is a lady.

If I'm remembering correctly, the reason his relationship ended with Elizabeth was because he couldn't have a real relationship with her. Or rather, he decided he wanted to try one too late.

because he is unable to let the love of his life go - that's love -

More like obsession. He and Elizabeth never really had a relationship, just lots of kinky sex. Was there potential for a real love relationship? Sure. But it never happened. That was the tragedy of the first movie.

It wasn't really love that spurred him on in this movie. It was regret at what might have been and an attempt to capture it.

can you tell me what happened to Elizabeth?

Elizabeth died of a drug overdose. They touch on her addiction here.

Watching it lately, I understand it better. Its the story that messes this movie up as a whole. The concept was originally to involve Elizabeth, but when Kim Basinger passed on the chance to reprise her character, they had to change it all around. That is why I think all goes decently well until after John learns of Elizabeth's fate (midpoint) its kind of downhill (storyiwse) from there,, particularly after the scene where Dougray Scott slaps Claire.

On the plus side, the movie is dark yet has a nice visual feel to it. It does good on capturing that early century romantic Paris design and tone. The scenery and aesthetics make the movie nice to look at.

One of the problem is that Everhart's character plays a similar motive John played in Nine and Half Weeks. In that he was dominate, yet had his romantic side,,a common characteristic used in movies targeted towards woman. I don't feel that it worked well coming from a female.

Not terrible if you can appreciate the romantic beauty the movie tires to paint.
