Remember that line: 'The shock of her death froze something in me.'

'The shock of her death froze something in me. The child I loved was gone, but I kept looking for her - long after I had left my own childhood behind.'

There you go. These words explain everything, so there's no need to constantly ask whether Humbert was a pedhophile, a pervert, or whatever. His love for Annabel was real and strong. And when she died that same love was, for lack of a better word, 'sealed' for years and years. And Lolita was the person who unlocked it all.

The character was NOT a pedhophile. He was a victim of his own feelings and experiences. A tortured soul. It's a lot easier to call Humbert a pedhophile and create a controversy than to actually listen to what he had to say 5 minutes into the movie.

Now, I'm not defending his actions, I'm just stating that things in life are not always black and white. There's gray area as well.

Always remember that.

Nicely said. Well, in regards to the movie anyway, as he's portrayed more sympathetically than the novel.

Yes, I am talking about the film version of Humbert. Truth be told though, it's been a while since I've read the novel (close to 15 years) and the film version of Humbert is the one that's really stuck in my head.

Maybe because I've seen the movie one too many times : )

His lost childhood love was tragic but he is still a pedophile. In the book Humbert is obsessed with young girls. His plan with Lolita was to take her to Mexico and have a daughter that he could use. You say you aren't justifying his actions but you are. Just because he suffered a tragic loss as a child doesn't mean it negates his predatory inclinations.

reply

Humbert was not a Pedophile he was what is called an Hebephile- someone who's main attraction is geared toward young people between the ages of 11-14.

One trait of Hebephilia is that the Hebephile is extremely immature in behavior and seems to mimic the emotional maturity of pre and early teens. I read somewhere that a lot of Hebephiles suffered some sort of severe emotional trauma when they were this age themselves and that the trauma stunts their emotional maturity from progressing.

Froze in the past or not Humbert was still a predator and I wouldn't let him within 100 yards of my granddaughters.

As far as the movie is concerned, no, he's not a predator and he's not a pedophile. He's not going after other young girls and he's strictly focused on Dolores. The reason? I explained it in my original post. She was the 'key', she unlocked his feelings.

I'm NOT talking about the book. This is the board for the movie LOLITA, and I am strictly focused on the movie. All my comments are about the movie. And the way the movie presented the character, he was certainly not a pedophile. Watch it again, the character himself is very much aware that he's about to cross the line and he questions his own action constantly, a.k.a. the voiceover.

Besides, real pedophiles are certainly more, for lack of a better word, 'hardcore' than mellow old Humbert. Again, IN THE MOVIE the character was a tortured soul, and at the end of it he actually learned his lesson. Something real pedophiles don't usually do.

Predator now, huh? Wow, just wow. You guys really see this character as a flat-out monster, without even thinking about the stuff that could've caused some of his actions. As I said, it's a lot easier to just judge the book by its cover, without realizing that things might go a lot deeper than what we see on the surface. Keep in mind, Humbert, IN THE MOVIE, was not going after other young girls, he was not stalking other girls. There is a reason he's solely focused on Lolita. A reason I think I explained in my original post. She's the 'key' that unlocked his feelings. He was not looking for that, he was not folowing her all his life.

And by the way, watch some documentaries or read news stories about REAL pedophiles and sexual predators. The way they think, the way they act. And then think again if Humbert, as presented in the movie, is indeed one of them.

Exactly. HH is not a pedophile in the film. He's a lost Romeo, suffering from the "Amfortas Wound" which will never heal unless and until he finds an adequate replacement for his long lost childhood beloved. The film's Lo doesn't need any "grooming". She's no twelve year old innocent (and Swain looked like she could such the chrome off a trailer hitch). Yes, HH insinuated himself into the Haze household, but he was only following the only path open to him, because he must have Lo. No other would do. And in possessing her - does he ever? - he seals his fate.

^^^^ Thank you. You were able to explain it better than I did.

Don't care what names u give it or explain his "feelings" this mofo had sex with an underage girl and for that he is a *beep* pedophile. PERIOD. And if you are trying to give reasons as to why this sick *beep* did what he did, and thought the way he did, you must be one too dammit

^^^^ You sound like an uneducated tween with some anger issues. Don't insert your UNeducated and angry ass in discussions you know nothing about. You understand me?

Grown ups write here, and you don't belong with that kind of behavior. You need to grow up first, and then when you start understanding the complicated human nature, people will take you seriously. The world is going to hell exactly because of people like you: people who throw labels without thinking, people who rush to judgment without realizing that not everything is black and white.

If you want to be a part of discussions, take the time to read and actually UNDERSTAND all comments. Because if all you do is posting 'beep* this, *beep* that' comments you will simply be treated as an annoying, useless TROLL.

Firstly, I am an educated, full grown woman and I do know how to read, so all that bs you said about me you can keep that. I have just as much a right to say how I feel about something, just as you do. This particular subject strikes too close to home with me because my oldest daughter was molested by a man who I thought I could trust and exchanged vows with, who was abusive to her and to me, and FYI, yes it took years of therapy to find closure. I do apologize for my rude behavior, but I do not apologize for how this subject raises my hackles. Again, my apologies.

What happened to you and your daughter was wrong. It's painful, I'm sure.

But with all due respect, this is a different story. First, this is fiction, based on a book. Second, Humbert was obsessed with Lolita because of the death of his first true love. He saw Lolita as a reincarnation of his first love. He didn't go after other young girls. As far as Lolita was concerned, he knew what he was doing was wrong, he even admits it in the voiceover. He wanted to stop, but he was too weak. His feelings were too strong. And at the end of the day he knew that there was a price to be paid.

Those are certanly not the actions of a typical pedhophile or a predator.

Also, let's not forget that Lolita herself was not really an angel...Hell, at the start she was the one seducing Humbert. She wanted to be with him. Until Quilty showed up of course.....
