Cute little 90s film buuut...(Spoilers)

Again, spoilers.

So, I love 90's films. And I gave this one a shot being that it's a 90's film, Bon Jovi was in it, Josh Charles, and set in San Fran.

But this movie bothered me because in my opinion the only truly likable characters were Nina and Kevin. Let me explain why.

Ann- It's obvious she sucks. She is a "player" who doesn't care about other's feelings. She is selfish. Also highly unattractive and the casting was so off there. No freaking way that woman would be "that lesbian" who makes confused pretty college students experiment with women. Her looks and personality sucked, so it was unrealistic to me that both Kate and Rebecca would go for her.

Adam- He is complicated. I liked him but overall I didn't. If he wasn't over Kate, he shouldn't have been serious with Nina, or dated Rebecca. He hurt two girls, and it was selfish. He ran right back to Kate, and when Kate of course broke his heart again he ends up with Rebecca right away. So lame. Not cool. And at the beginning of the film when he said he's worried Nina might be cheating on him he said "Normally I am the one fooling around so this feels weird." and goes on about his story of wanting something only when someone steals it away. He also rarely smiles and took the whole brooding artist thing too far. He was serious in almost every scene, and had some redeeming qualities but wasn't too likable. I love Josh, he is a good actor normally and so hot but in this he didn't play the character well.

Kate- Super selfish. Naive but selfish. She toyed with Adam. Pined over some a-hole way older than her (Ann) Full of herself. Very un self aware.

Rebecca- Not enough self respect. Didn't have any passions of her own. And made a joke about it like that's ok. No, try and find something you're passionate about if you feel lost which she obviously was. I didn't understand when she said "I don't get why they wasted a good body on me." that might just be bad writing... but wtf r u talking about? She said she doesnt feel connected to her body(which I get if its like body image issues), but that wasnt it, she said she knew she had a good body it just had to do with her saying she isnt good at sex and whats the point of sex if you can masturbate. Her entire character was just confusing and pointless and she ends up with Adam which to me shows she really has no confidence or self esteem when he left her and cheated on her right away when Kate calls.

So really, Nina and Kevin (the two people that I think are supposed to be "the bad ones") in my opinion were the best.

Kevin- Says was an alcoholic who loses interests in women once get gets them. Also was sleeping with Adams GF Nina. So yeah not cool, but Adam had told Kevin on and on and on forever about how hes still very much in love with KATE. While it wasnt cool to lie to Adam and sleep with Nina behind Adams back, I think Kevin knew deep down this wouldn't hurt Adam because he wasnt in love with Nina and treated Nina poorly.

Nina cheated on Adam. Not cool. And claimed she wasted too many years with bad men and kept making the same mistakes. BUT Nina was a strong, independent woman with a good job (other than Rebecca and Kate) and did at least feel horrible about cheating and told Adam she did love him just felt number two to Kate. And went on to get pregnant and decide to keep the child and be a good mother.

Both Kevin and Nina were the only ones to really admit to their flaws head on and do something about it. Adam, Rebecca and Kate sort of tried to act like they were innocent nice people blaming everyone else but themselves for their troubles in romance but didnt quite grasp their own flaws like Kevin and Nina did. Kevin and Nina both admitted their romance troubles stemmed from their own issues. Honesty is the best.

Kevin was in AA and truly fell for Nina. He was persistent in being in a real relationship with her. And then genuinely excited to be a dad. and Nina tried to avoid Kevin for as long as she could, feeling about about the Adam thing but when she heard Adam was fine and already dating Rebecca, she was like eff it then ill try be happy too and got together with Kevin and was ready to have a family and be genuinely solid, more grounded and happy. She told the priest she knew she was wrong in her earlier actions, just like Kevin told his AA group he had been wrong.

Not once did Adam say the way he was treating girls was effed up. Like even with Kate where at the end of their relationship he asked for a threesome with Kate and Ann, then sent a private investigator to freaking follow Kate around. How hypocritical and crazy when he himself has cheated a lot in the past, and even brought up the threesome idea. (kind of funny though this reminds me of Ross on friends losing his wife to a woman after a threesome lol) I mean he said sorry a few times to a few people but didnt seem to mean it. He just said it cause he knew he had to. His biggest redeeming quality was he truly said he would help Nina with the baby if it ended up being his.

So while I sort of enjoyed the film, I just kept getting frustrated with most of the characters and their crappy personalities. Kate was maybe the worst. She was so self involved, arrogant, selfish, took advantage of Adam even though she knew what it was like to be hurt by Ann. Knew she was a lesbian the entire time and just got back with Adam because she needed someone. She jerked him around and expected him to and knew he would just follow her like a puppy and was ok with it. And only broke up with him when Adam told him he might be a father.

Rebecca's character bordered on pointless, so if you're going to add her in the mix at least make her interesting and not such a pathetic person.

I like movies like this, where romances are tangled and it's set in a cool city and they end up knowing each other but I think the script and story could have been done better.

Also thought it was funny that Kevin said "San fran is a cheap place to live" umm ok maybe in 97 it was a *tad* cheaper but they had a chef, bartender, starving artist and students living in these huge, beautiful places in the city. Not realistic. and Adam said "San fran is full of singles" yeah maybe but they are mostly single homosexual men. Even in the 90's. So when Kate said she was confused as to why San fran wasn't panning out as a place to fall in love umm? Who goes to San fran to fall in love? lol. She even said she didn't want to get married or have kids. Her character literally made no sense.

I give it a 5.7 out of 10. It was watchable while bored.

Good review.

Lol, Adam never said he's the one usually fooling around, that was your favourite Kevin. And there's nothing wrong with not having passion. Better no passion than passion to cheat on someone you're supposed to love, like your boyfriend or your best friend, which again your two favs did.
