A mistake that so many uneducated Americans make, just like Cameron Diaz in this movie.
Scotland is NOT in England. Scotland and England are different countries. It would like saying France is in Germany. Scotland and England are both in Great Britain.
That obviously wasn't a "mistake" on the part of the filmmakers, it was just to show how in the middle of nowhere they were since that guy believed everything she said, like the whole Ritchie Vanderlow thing. It was definitely intended.
Think about it, the director is English and the leading man is Scottish. I think they know.

shareNo, it was clearly an intentional joke. Any dumbing down that was going on was for the guy that lived in the middle of nowhere, showing him up as being isolated/weird/stupid because he didn't question it. If they were dumbing it down for the audience they would have simply stated what seems obvious, eg; Scotland is near England, instead of saying it's IN England, which is obviously a joke. Or maybe you're just having laugh and you know it's a joke!?
