real bad

im a big fan of danny boyle but ive just rewatched this movie after first seeing it 10 years ago.

i remember not liking it and now i remember why. its truly a missfire by boyle and co. im not quite sure what he was thinking when he made this. i guess after trainspotting he wanted to do something a bit more lighthearted but this film just doesnt work. it feels awkward and tries waaaaay to hard to achieve something but what tht is i have no idea. but it misses it anyway. big time!

the scenes in heaven and cringeworthy. and i really have a disliking for holly hunter. terrible actress.

so much talent present but it just doesnt gel. truly awful.

although i suspect, and please dnt think me too sexist or tht im stereotyping, that this is a 'chick flick'. i probably think the ladies regard this movie much more than the guys.

either way, i dnt think i can watch this piece of trash ever again.

i need to revisit the beach now and see if tht was as bad as i remember.

i was left with the same impression actually, not entirely sure why i disliked it so much. in retrospect it does almost come off as a coen brothers film that never quite made it.

having said that, i watched the beach yesterday (after watching this) and was surprised to find that i liked it... heard nothing but awful things about it. i'm now watching the english patient to continue the theme of "is this movie really as bad as it's meant to be?".

Gotta agree. I kept watching to see if Boyle found a way to make the quirkiness work and pieces add up. Nope. Incredibly bad film. We laughed at the painfully long and dreadful ending, but not because it was intentionally funny.

A true disaster.

reply

Yes, it is quirky, and I was hoping to like it, but it just never happened. All it did was annoy the piss out of me. Ah, well, not every movie is for everybody.

I have to disagree with the OP. I think Hunter is a very talented performer, but there was no way for her to excel in this one.

reply

I didn't like it either. Many things in this movie were awkward and not in a good way.

You took the words right out of my mouth. A movie with so much going for it (a strong and talented cast, the musical sequence, the crazy zonked-out situations that went down) yet none of it gelled together at all, and it was like the filmmakers had all this good material and ideas jumping around, but didn't know how to work all of that out to make a compelling story that people would actually give a damn about. That was their main problem---they didn't do that, and that's why the movie flopped. Not hard to see why, though. It's basically just an interesting experiment that didn't work out, that's all.

The soundtrack is pretty good, and worth tracking down, too.
