One of the Most Embarrassingly Bad Movies of the 90's...

I just rewatched it a few nights ago after having not seen it in close to 20 years. I cringed throughout the whole movie.

Jim Carey was a ridiculous cartoon character. That would be ok and even great in movies where he plays ridiculous, cartoony characters like in 'Ace Ventura,' 'The Mask,' or 'Dumb and Dumber.'

But in this movie, it was embarrassing to watch how unnatural his dialogue, actions, and

Wrong

OK. A lawyer running out of a courthouse, waving his arms in the air and screaming "I love my son!" over and over and over again. That's not ridiculous and cartoony?

reply

Wow, a comedy that’s ridiculous? That’s such an outrageous concept!

reply

Badly ridiculous, while still trying to be grounded.

reply

You obviously haven't watched all the other Jim Carry movies.

reply

I've watched most of his classic ones a thousand times, and none of them make me cringe like this one does.

reply

Really? Dumb & dumber, but this you couldn't stand?

reply

All the cringe in 'Dumb and Dumber' was intentionally cringey. That was the whole point. You're supposed to cringe and laugh at how dumb and clueless Harry and Lloyd were.

In 'Liar Liar,' it was the regular dialogue and character interaction that was cringey. Because it was terrible writing, and terrible acting.

reply

It’s supposed to be ridiculous and cartoony, the thing is this movie did ridiculous and cartoony well.

But it’s fine if you don’t like it, there are plenty of popular comedies like Christmas Vacation that I can’t stand.

reply

the thing is this movie did ridiculous and cartoony well.

See, that's where I disagree. Carrey has much more ridiculous and cartoony movies, but they did it well. This one was atrocious at it, IMO.

reply

OK

reply

Agreed.

Great film.

Another person that dows not get the concept that they are 100 years older, and it is themselves that have changed. Movies cannot change by definition...they don't become better, worse, funnier, less funny etc. It is you yourself that change over the years, your opinions, your tastes, your outlook on life etc.

can this be posted on the front page of this website? PLEEEEASE????

reply

I thought it was god-awful when I was young, too! Hence the 20 year gap where I never felt the urge to rewatch it. Finally rewatching it again just reminded me what a pile of shit it is.

reply

It's you who should be embarrassed.

reply

K.

reply

You're complaining about a character being "ridiculous", "cartoony" in a PG-13 comedy where a man is physically & mentally prohibited from lying due to a birthday wish.
The movie is supposed to be ridiculous and cartoonish.
If he had acted like this in a drama that took itself seriously, like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, then sure, it would've been awkward and out of place. But in Liar Liar? Nah.

reply

The thing is, it doesn't take itself seriously overall but this movie does have parts that are supposed to be heartfelt and dramatic, and those are the corniest, worst parts, IMO.

reply

Absolutely right, Nitro. Good thread, btw.

reply

THANK you!

It's terrible.

reply

and... AND WHAT? Don't leave us hanging. I enjoyed it for what it was going in because you know it was Carrey and knew it was going to be goofy just from the title alone. No cringe there.

reply

Chill. It's not a bad film.

reply

Lol, your nuts. This was hysterically funny.
