Jim Carrey saved this movie

I just watched it, and somehow Jim Carrey's performance seemed the most acceptable. The other roles weren't played very well, the writing was mediocre, and for some reason it didn't seem to take people away like a lot of other movies do. I am a huge fan of Jim Carrey's work, but for some reason this didn't make my list.

I agree. He is hillarious in every scene that is supposed to be funny and he makes you sad for him when it is a sad scene. He is frantic when he needs to be frantic. The part couldn't have been played better.

u got that right, i cant imagine any1 else who wud hav played that part.

Jim Carrey takes a silly concept and what would be a cheesy script and turns it into comedy gold. This movie would have sucked if not for his silly expressions and over-the-top delivery. So I ended up finding it a very funny and entertaining movie in spite of it being not that great of a script.

He didn't save it, he was the movie. I doubt this movie was written, and then they cast Jim Carrey. This movie had to have been written with him in mind because it wouldn't have worked with anybody else.

If you read in the trivia, Steve Martin was originally considered for the role but he didn't want to do it.

reply

I think Steve Martin would have been brilliant in this, but Jim Carrey was brilliant too.

reply

Steve Martin already did this film, it was called 'All of Me'.

It's not the years, honey; it's the mileage.

I agree that Carrey probably did carry the movie. But I would probably also say the partnership between he and director Tom Shadyac was also a factor. The two have collaborated together on some of Carrey's most successful films which included Ace Ventura pet detective, Bruce Almighty, and Liar Liar. I somehow doubt that this is just a coincidence.

Since the movie had a $45 million budget,
and Carrey was paid $20 million of that, almost half of the budget,
I would hope that he would give a good performance... :-)

I don't think that's true. The wife was good, 'Jerry' was good, the old boss was hilarious, the woman that tried to sabotage Fletcher was good, the secretary was good.. the kid wasn't very good, though, and the most cringy moments happen exactly when Jim Carrey is doing stuff with the kid. It just doesn't work.

Those are the only times Jim Carrey seems - instead of overactor - kind of 'off' and cringy. Like he doesn't know what he's doing, maybe uncomfortable. He seems 'fake' in some weird way, as odd as that is to say about him.

His solo performances are the best (the pen bit, for example), and his scenes with other adults (as with the 'roasting the boss'-segment) are great. But every time he does 'the claw', it's hard to watch, because he seems so fake in a really cringy way.

I suspect 'the claw' is not Jim Carrey's own invention, and is not part of his original routine. It's outside his comfort zone, and he certainly doesn't do a good job with it. I am convinced someone else write the whole 'claw' skit and then presented it to him, and he figured he can do it. It doesn't feel like 'his own' thing, like the 'buttocks-talking' does, for example (in other movies).

It's also a bit odd to say Jim Carrey SAVED this movie, when this is one of those movies that are basically TAILORED around Jim Carrey and his antics. It's like they tried to think of an idea that would give Jim Carrey the largest amount of opportunities to flex his face, body and intonations.
