He LIED!!!!

Ok this has always bothered me bc it is a blatant lie and im surprised no one has caught it! The scene where Fletcher begs Greta to stay after hes telling her all the lies hes told her over the years (the garage sale gift), then Greta tells him the story about her friend and the burglar. Ok now, she asks him "do you think that's justice?" Fletcher replies "no! I would have got him 10". Greta then proceeds to pack her stuff to go, as she leaves Fletcher begs and says "no wait! I didnt understand the question!" That's a lie!! He clearly understood it! Which is why she got mad and left! Has anyone caught that before?? LOLĀ

You do have a good point, but you could make the argument that it was the greedy lawyer inside of him talking instead of a normal human being. Meaning, when Greta asks the question, "Do you think that's justice?", the answer she was looking for was "No, that's completely unfair, that should've never happened to your friend", but Fletcher, being a greedy lawyer who only thinks of money at the time, was thinking, "No, it's not justice because the guy didn't get ENOUGH money out of it, I could've gotten him more." Fletcher was a Defense Attorney, it's his job to defend the side that's being accused of the crime, therefore his brain is always wired to think what's best for them, whether they're guilty or not. So, in a way, Fletcher was telling the truth when he said "I didn't understand the question", because he was looking at the scenario for the Criminal's best interest instead of Greta's friend's best interest. Does that make any sense?

True! Never thought of it that way lol

He says he didn't understand the question then says - that's a lie! because he did understand and was lying.

reply

He didn't understand what Greta meant by the question. He got it wrong, because he 'understood it wrong', meaning he didn't 'understand it correctly'.

Thus, it's perfectly true that he didn't understand the question. He thought it was the other kind of question.

My favorite scene

Same argument can be made when he claims "Ohhhh, I'm such a 5H!T!!!"....

I think he also lied when he threatened to "break his arm off".

reply

It was also a lie when he said "it has to be" when the judge asked him if it was true that delaying a bathroom break could make it difficult to achieve an erection. I'm sure Fletcher didn't actually believe that.

reply

Why wouldn't he believe it. Up until that point every time he said something that was a lie he either couldn't get it out or he would follow it up with "that's a lie" or something equivalent. When he says that to the judge he says it clearly and without hesitation. Besides that, it was something he heard and since he can't know for certain if it's true or not, it cannot be a lie.

I like using this example. Let's say someone stops you walking down the road and they ask you for directions to a certain place. You tell them it's two blocks up the road and one block to the right. You tell them that because that's where you think it is when in reality it is actually one block up and one block to the right. Now you are wrong but you didn't lie because you didn't actually know where the location was, you just told him where you thought it was.

This was already answered in another thread.

This is not a lie. He really didn't understand WHAT Greta was really asking. Thus, he didn't understand the question. Also, there are multiple meanings to the word "understand", it also means 'stand under' (someone's authority), according to Black's Law dictionary, and a lawyer would know this, so ... definitely not a lie.

You're right. How did I never notice that?
