Anyone else find Jerry annoying?

Now I definitely think he was a nice guy with a good heart and genuinely loved Audrey and cared about Max... but it always bugged me how he tried to kinda take Fletcher's place and play a fatherly role in Max's life so quick. I don't think he was intentionally trying to isolate Max from his dad or anything, and I bet alot of what he "knew" about Fletcher was just stuff Audrey said when she was annoyed at him... but he should've still stopped to consider their feelings from the other side of the fence.

Personally I hate when stepparents (or worse, just boyfriends/girlfriends of someone who has a kid) try and weasel their way into kids' lives and tell them what to do like they're their natural parent. As I said I think Jerry had good intentions and certainly wasn't being like that, but he was still irritating, lol. You could tell even Audrey got a little annoyed with him a couple times. I'm sure his character was written this way on purpose though.

I think he was also rushing Audrey into marriage and moving to Boston with him a little too quick, too.

A couple of points.

First of all, he was SUPPOSED to be annoying. It was supposed to be OBVIOUS to the audience, as to why Audrey wouldn't want to marry this nerdy goofball. Although he is a "Hospital Administrator" - as BORING as it may sound, it also sounds like a relatively lucrative, high status job. I mean, he basically gets to boss around doctors and nurses, and doctors are men women lust for universally. He is also doing something important and worthwhile that helps the community and other individuals.

A charismatic lawyer always beats a nerdy and boring accountant-type - that's what realistic about this movie. Audrey was going to marry him just out of spite, because she was angry with Fletcher.

"but he should've still stopped to consider their feelings from the other side of the fence. "

Yeah, that would have made a really funny comedy! A movie where people consider 'feelings' (why would anyone consider FEELINGS anyway? Sheesh, what are we, eggs? Do we really break that easily?) all the time, sounds HILARIOUS!

... Not.

Unless done well, and to the extreme, then it can be hilarious again.

This is not a documentary, it's a COMEDY MOVIE, basically the whole plot and other characters are all expendable, and exist and work in this film only to provide a VEHICLE FOR JIM CARREY and his style of comedic expression.

And the movie does this very well.

The part where Jerry attempts "the claw" gets me every time. One of the funniest parts of the movie.

Isn't Jerry's medical job the lead in to his character in the "Saw" films?

I like that they didn't make him out to be a total jerk as movies often do to potential stepparents. He was a bit of a dork, but still a nice guy with good intentions.

reply

Yep, exactly. No one wants to see Audrey and Max move to Boston with him because we are cheering for Fletcher to become a better man but at the end of the day, Jerry is a great guy too. I mean he loves Audrey and Max and he certainly has the best of intentions.

He was definitely a try-hard.

reply

Yes I found him very annoying. He was obviously a good guy but just came off really irritating.

"Heyy great gift dad!"
"Thanks son!"

I agree with you. But that is what makes him a little bit Magoo! :) Great post.
