Leon and the garbage trucks

I have to ask why in the world did Leon (John Turturro) keep getting hit by those garbage trucks? I thought it was hillarious when he was explaining to the bookies how he was suspended in mid-air for wabout six minutes after the truck flung him from his bike. He said he really had time to think while he was up there. HA HA that was some funny stuff. I really don't like seeing John play roles where he is mentally challenged. This being because people like to brand someone to be like the characters that they portray. So, if John was like Leon, well you know. I would have to give him a 10 on his ablility to play it off as though he is really mental. That isn't any easy task, mind you. Just thought the garbage truck thing was a little odd, is all.
