Sauna Scene....

I don't know about anyone else, but when Jason Patric was describing his sex with Timmy, I got extremely aroused the first time I heard it....so detailed, so beautifully written...u can see him smiling and his eyes glazing over, remembering his glorious moment in high school....they should have written an alternate ending where he and Timmy are in bed together at the end of it all.....

LOL, I don't know if I share your ending statement, but I did think that scene was extremely well written and acted by Jason. He was so involving. You couldn't take your eyes off of him. He's so underrated as an actor.

It's sad, because he makes really smart choices film-wise. I love how he doesn't conform to doing the crappy Hollywood blockbusters and does movies that he cares about and feels an emotional pull to. It's inspiring. Someone who takes it that seriously.

You're right....he dabbled a bit on the "mainstream" side when he did the crappy "Speed 2," but then he wised up and decided his fans would appreciate it if he chose better roles, not just popular roles...

So...on an unrelated note...why a Mean Creek fan? Love that movie too...what about it appealed to you?

Nothing personal, but that's disgusting. It's a great scene but I couldn't finish it I was so disgusted by Patric's character. He raped that poor boy and actually thought he enjoyed it! That's just sick and disturbing. Shows how most rapists have a perverse, off way of thinking. Great job by Patric though. I've never hated a character in a movie like I hated his.

They're criminals, and there's absolutely nothing romantic about it.

reply

I guess what I meant to say is that Jason's character made it seem so lovingly and so passionate that it stirred feelings not of a rapist, but of someone whose only real good sex experience was something maniacal and tragic....but his delivery of it is what was arousing...not the fact that it was a rape....

reply

I see what you're saying. Well, to the character I'm sure it seemed that way. But I'm also sure it was completely different for his victim.

They're criminals, and there's absolutely nothing romantic about it.

Granted, what he did was horrible & he should have gone to prison. Still, his character is quite a compelling misogynist, like the way Hannibal Lecter is a psychotic serial killer. The sauna scene is so memorable for Patrics performance, just sitting there, matter-of-factly recounting the rape. Its stunning listening to it.

I think it's sick how people think he did a good job at selling it as something beautiful. The fact that he thinks that the boy he raped actually had some connection with him shows how sick he really is. I know that there's a term for people who conenct with the person who's held them captive or hurt them, but I don't think this was the case. He tried to make it seem like Timmy was enjoying it. No way would that kid after being raped by two other guys suddenly enjoys it with the next guy in line. What would the chances be that the kid was just as messed up as Jason Patric's character? I say zero...I think the point of the story was to show that he has some really serious issues.

ONe of the great monologue performances in the history of film. Four minutes, uncut, the guys naked, no hand movements, no music, and those words. I defy you to find another

well said...labute is a master of words

easily one of the top ten scenes ever with the no cut book store scene right behind it. and for the moviebooklvr, you need to stick to books. you could not finish the scene. yea why dont i buy that. silly

reply

I love face that the guys make afterwards...LOL I still get a giggle out of it.

I agree, it was well said. And he actually had tears in his eyes when he was saying it. He said that he had thought Timmy came as well. So thats why he thought him and Timmy had a connection. I dont know what would conspire football boys of 4 to rape 1 kid, but its weird.

Ben Stiller's line always makes me laugh out loud and breaks the total shock and seriousness of what Jason Patric just described. That's interesting that the writer/director dictated every comma, semi-colon, pause, etc. I thought that was Jason Patric. When he took that swig of water and paused I was like oh my gosh. And when he's describing it, it's so sick, so twisted, so horrific that I just want to stop it and make it go away, but his acting is so brilliant and awesome that you can actually picture the scene. How could that Aaron Eckhardt guy be and stay friends with such a sick freak. The letterhead scene with the STD thing was sick. Him kicking that baby was sick. Him getting furious at the woman getting her period saying it was planned was sick. (yet I always laugh at that scene, but not laugh-ha-ha, laugh like WTF?) How does this sick freak have normal friends?

Is it okay if I do it for mom and not you? 'Cause I really like mom.

"Ben Stiller's line always makes me laugh out loud and breaks the total shock and seriousness of what Jason Patric just described."

It's genius, because in the context of their lives, what Ben Stiller said is more shocking than what Jason Patric said.

Aaron Eckhart is the beta male to Patric's alpha. Patric is the one who works out, alone or not; chubby Eckhart only goes to the gym to spend time with the guys.

The OP is clearly gay, but by his comment, he reveals the fact that some victims (like the OP) may have actually enjoyed (on some level) the encounter. Timmy may have been gay, and may have ultimately enjoyed having JP doing him. And if nothing else, we know that JP clearly enjoyed it.

What noteworthy about the scene is a(n) (ostensibly) straight male admitting such an experience to other straight friends. That's what's so striking -- the honesty and forthrightness of the statement. Say what you will about JP, but he's honest, unlike almost everyone else in the movie.

I don't think the scene was beautiful at all, but the memory was clearly beautiful to Cary, JP's character. That what made it so weird.
