Why was this rated NC-17? I haven't seen the whole film. just a part of it on IFC. And before they show movies on that channel, they have bits of trivia, one of which was that this originally got an NC-17 film rating, but there was no violence or nudity. What made them give it that rating then?
"Clerks" was also rated NC-17 for sexual dialogue. (it was also appealed to an R) The MPAA's policy says that, yes, movies can be rated NC-17 for sexual dialogue (not for language alone; as in, you won't get an NC-17 even if your movie uses the F-word 470 times, or even "c-nt" 40+ times (case in point: "Nil By Mouth")), though it's not common.
The only one that got an NC-17 for that sort of thing, and stayed that way is "Orgazmo", yet another stupid MPAA decision.
"I would engage in a battle of wits with you... but you appear unarmed."
Did you notice how the imdb users rated this film 6.5 out of 10....Roger Ebert gave it 4, and I agree with him. The NC 17 rating was given only because of the force and controversy of this film. People are more uncomfortable with attacks on their society then they are on a bit of nudity or violence. And there are plenty of attacks on both the human behavior and on the whole system that we live in. Like Ebert said, this is "the kind of date movie that makes you want to go home alone."
Censorship, without including banning, should be proportional to uncomfortableness being a natural response to immediate, intense and testing experience.
A few items of mass media may have to be banned in the course of a civilisation, a snuff movie, a pornographic or other genre movie that breaks the law. It is not logical that a great number of films would survive to viewing stage that were repugnant to humanity enough that they would be banned. As a jury of a suspects peers find justice, life's encounters and experiences along the films path would not allow its progress, the cameramen, the actors, the editors, the distributors, the runners, the apprentice who colours in the end titles and all involved would not progress a film that was of this level of distaste. Censorship helps trim the films that push views to make them acceptable.
I don't see your point either. Censorship of what you just discribed is self censorship on the parts of people who aren't psychotic or perverted. Government censorship (like giving an NC-17 rating, crippling the amount of theaters it will play in) is wrong and stifling to society's artistic nature. Sure there is fringe, but that doesn't mean it is degenerate.
the mpaa and its rating board are not part of the government, and ratings aren't legally bound. the theater owners, however, can set rules as to who can see what in their theaters. the same applies for rental/retail stores. parental advisory stickers are also not legally binding.
hate to tell you acurl33, but ebert didnt give it a 4, he compared it to WHOS AFRAIS OF VIRGINIA WOLFE, and considers it a modern masterpiece. plus he screened it at his overlooked film festival 3 years ago. get your *beep* straight
The real reason to me why it was NC-17(politics aside), is that it had a pretty large amount of strong sexuality and graphic language....and plus instead of using R in cinema, a lot of people jump aboard to the NC-17 factor!!!
In Australia it's only MA15+.It was on the other night on tv. I liked Jason patric's character. And i like how he threatned ben stillers dyke grilfriend. How do you spell threaghtned is that right?
This drives me absolutely crazy. An NC-17 for LANGUAGE?! They tried the same thing with another one of my favorite movies, "Chasing Amy." It's so reprehensible. You can see all sorts of murder and mutilation in war movies or horror movies, but a little frank talk about the birds & bees earns you an NC-17 rating. Totally bogus. Crap like this makes it hard to take the MPAA seriously.
The MPAA is a joke. They're one of the main reasons why mainstream hollywood movies these days are crap and indi films are better. All the studios are playing it safe in avoiding the dreaded NC-17 rating and releasing crap like Transformers and all these CGI'd to death super hero movies, action/ adventure etc to appeal to the larger market. The MPAA and Hollywood greed is killing the art of modern cinema.
The NC-17 rating came from the verbal description of graphic sexual acts. There's no direct nudity. There's sex scenes, but the actual sex scenes aren't that big of deal. And you can watch this when you are younger, but I think it'll mean something more and different for people over 25 or something. TV versions usually edit it. If you want to see this movie in all its glory, get the DVD.
Is it okay if I do it for mom and not you? 'Cause I really like mom.
